The BBC and Dunkirk

Whilst reading the Mail on Sunday this morning, one of the supplement magazines is carrying an article about the new BBC “Docu-Drama” Dunkirk, which is being screened in February.

The producer is basicaly setting out to blow away the myth that ‘Dunkirk’ was an example of true British grit. The programme will show how the owners of the ‘little ships’ had to be bribed and press ganged into helping with the evacuation!

After choking on my cornflakes i decided that i found this very offensive as a British person! Should the producer step down?

I know this doesn’t have a strong historical aviation link but on the back of the disgraceful reporting done by BBC look east on the sad events at Duxford this year, in particular Flying Legends i just feel its about time the BBC paid there own way!

Yours extremely p*ssed off

Dez

I,like Dez will wait until viewing before I pass comment. That said I am truly grateful for the ‘little ships’ as my grandfather was on the last boat out of Dunkirk before the Germans overran. If he wasnt so lucky I would not be here. My grandfathers life took an ironic twist as 36 years after he was rescued he returned to the beach he was evacuated from as part of the Dunkirk Veterans associations visit there. He later had a heart attack and died there. A few years later he appeared on the cover of the partwork ‘Images of War’ issue 1 which featured the Dunkirk evacuations.

Dunkirk (the film with John Mills) shows one ‘not very keen’ boat owner.

Yes, it was true British grit and all that, yes it was a victory, yes it was a defeat and so on. But no programme will EVER show an unbiased report on anything – it will make a one sided argument, and one that people will talk about.
