Spitfire Ident

I’ve been scratching my head for a long time now about the ID of one particular Spitfire.

What I’m looking for is the serial of Spitfire Mk.Vb JU-U of 111 squadron RAF in summer/winter 1941 at North Weald and in spring 1942 at Debden.

Would also be interested in the ID of U of 111 squadron in North Afrika in 1943. I do not think it would be the same serial, though I frankly don’t know.

I’ve already tried to search ‘Spitfire the History’ but to search it you really need to know the serial to get anywhere.

Reason I´m asking, is because U of 111 sq. was the ‘personal’ aircraft of Þorsteinn ‘Tony’ Jonsson, the only Icelander to fly with the RAF during the war. I’m thinking about making a model (1/32 from Revell) of his aircraft.

Help anyone??

D’you know, I’ve got this strange feeling I’ve seen this one somewhere, just can’t think where! 🙁

Galdri – just a quick thought. Is this guy still around? I’m thinking possibly not, but if so and you could get in touch, he’s bound to have recorded the serial somewhere.

A long shot, I guess, but it’s the best I can think of without going through my books.

Daz,
The U was all black as well in the night fighter role. How ever I would like to make the model look like a ETO day fighter or MTO day fighter, in which case the serial would be visible

Galdri – was this Spitfire another nightfighter? If so, I think their serials would be practically obliterated by the nocturnal camouflage in any photos.

I think there’s a model kit of a 111 Sqdn nightfighter Spit VB, but I can’t recall the markings offhand…!

Daz,
At least a step in the right direction, but not really the aircraft I’m after. 111 sq was on night fighter duties at Debden in the winter 1941/42. The old man himself had some really funny things to say about that period!;)

The best I can come up with is “JU-H”, W3848, an all-black nightfighter Spitfire VB, flown by Sgt Peter Durnford while at Debden, December 1941.
