Raf Topclife??

Hi
I was just wondering , in a hangar at the far side of the Airfield in the 70s there was a superb collection of mainly WW2 and 50s aircraft. Does antone out there know what happened to these a/c and if so do you know WHERE they are. I remember they did a ground engine run on the JU 87 and it sounded super ( I am sure it was topclife or meby RAF Colerne????

Swift WK281, Avro 707s WZ744 & WZ736, Shorts SB5 WG768 & Fairey FD2 WG777.
Most of the above transferred to Finningley and all are still with us.

The swift is now at Tangmere, the 707A WZ736 is at Manchester Air & Space museum (from Cosford) The rest are still at Cosford.

I had the pleasure of working on all the Cosford based aircraft in the late 1970’s. Even had a friend jettison the canopy of the SB5 whilst I was leaning in the cockpit. Result: one bloody nose and a friend who ran a two minute mile.

The Ju87 would have been at Colerne (or St. Athan in later years).
Topcliffe however DID have a modest historic aircraft collection. At the 1972 air display the following were present : Swift WK281, Avro 707s WZ744 & WZ736, Shorts SB5 WG768 & Fairey FD2 WG777.
Most of the above transferred to Finningley and all are still with us.
Also present (and flying) that day was Beverley XB259 – I’ve often wondered, was that the last public flying display by a Beverley?

I would wager my bets on Colerne. The vast majority of the collection is in the RAFM collection or indeed on loan to other collections. A couple of the machines did meet a sad end. The Hastings springs to mind as the one that was destroyed on the dump at Catterick and the Valetta ended up with the SAS for training I think.
