Airshow enlightenment

Found this comment on the Culdrose Air Day website: –

still the lowest of the five, annual Ministry of Defence air displays.

It seems the MOD have a limit of 5 displays per year, presumbly spread out over the whole country.

Is that something new, or has anyone seen it before.

Also, why should we, the West Country, be limited to only Naval events.

Surely the RAF should be hosting one of the two displays down here, and RAF St Mawgan would certainly be a more attractive venue for me – its closer for a start!!!!

Thanks Niel, the one I was thinking of was in 98, god I must be getting old, feels like two years ago. They were then on Saturdays and wern’t strictly families only, anybody that turned up got in. There was a French Super Puma,German Bolkow 105, plus a selection of modern RAF and some civil including LY-ASA An2!! Hopefully it will make a return in 2004???

Arrive in one of the display aircraft.

🙁 B*mm*r – how about arriving with a photograph of a display aircraft with someone else in it? 😀

Surely not, I thought, but thought I’d check and guess what – it’s possibly true! 😮 The five airshows are (in order):

Cosford
Waddington
Culdrose
Leuchars
Yeovilton

And before anyone says, RIAT isn’t a military show.

Yep, it’s a midweek affair – Wednesday 14th July this – err I mean next – ummm well nearly this – year.

They’ve got the best URL though http://www.airday.co.uk

I’ve emailed to ask if they are having a photocall day, a-la Yeovilton, but I guess they’re all on leave at the moment.

And how does one get an invite to the crew room?

Not much, but I did take a few photos Click This LInk

I was amused when the Nimrod flew over at 200ft, quite loud, but nothing visible whatsoever!!!!

Culdrose was on Wed 16 July this year. The show was a virtual washout, but the arrivals and departures on the Tue and Thur were a lot of fun and there was free beer and Pimms in the crew room.:D

Price of entry? Ah [Enlightened Smilie!] – got ya!
Culdrose was always – for me – fun because I knew that there wouldn’t be that many people there; basically just the real enthusiasts and the locals. And yes – I camped; yes, I got wet.
St Mawgan used to be mid-week – to catch the holiday makers; they arrive and depart at the weekends, the traffic was/still is awful in good weather, etc. Didn’t the air day stop when the Nimrods moved out?
Ah yes, happy memories – got wet there too! If/as/when I get a film scanner I might drop a few images in…

Isn’t Culdrose strangely held midweek in July(or was that St Mawgan?). I would love to see more RAF displays pity they can’t rotate them round a bit. Why can’t one out of Odiham,Benson, and Brize hold one every couple of years? Benson was going that way with their large ‘families days’ that was open to anybody who turned up at the gate. Sadly the last one was about 5 years ago.

Price of entry Flood – yes, for the first time, I bought a tent. An anathema to me, but it was that or get wet.

Lowest as in on the map – or as in attendance figures?

When I went it was not exactly standing room only, but then it was raining when the tide was out… (i.e. very wet!)
