While on the subject of Chippy ID’s, would anybody know the ID of a Chippy that force landed in a field north of White Waltham in about 1972, it was with 6 AEF I think, & was lifted out of the field by a Wessex a few days later during a national rail strike. Also subsequent history if poss.

Obviously not seen some of the howlers I’ve had over the years then 🙂 a few of them would have been put to shame by some of the things you see in scrap yards.

Thanks for that David, the reason for me asking was because whilst car hunting in Diss today I spotted the tail section and wondered where it had come from. I also noticed a few lumps of Hunter and a Lightning canopy. Looks like I need to investigate this place further.

Yak – she crashed on the 13th of July 1970 at Laxfield in Sussex.
The cause is given as a stall during a turn – luckily not fatal for the pilot. She was on charge with Wyton Flight. Before that she flew
with a variety of University Air Squadron’s and 22RFS.
Her mortal remains belonged to 301 Squadron(Bury St. Edmunds) ATC for many years before being disposed of in 1989. The very sorry remains of her rear fuselage was being used as an attraction at Junk Junction in Diss – the tail leg and wheel was salvaged by me for Chipmunk WB733 on display at Doncaster.

Ralph Steiner at the Chipmunk Club keeps a record of all/many Chipmunks.

I’ll hunt down the contact details tonight in case you do not already have them.
