Help with this Liberfax

I’m looking for some info regarding the attached picture. The focus is the wartime Firetruck but my question revolves around what’s in the background to the right of the truck. The main body is that of a B 24 Liberator but the nose appears to be that of a Halifax. I’m guessing that the ad is an artist rendition of a true picture but can anyone provide some insight to this hybrid aircraft.

Thanks, Gerry

Hi Gerry,

I’d appreciate it if you’d e-mail me a higher res copy. It’s starting to bug me now that we can’t figure it out 🙂

Another view of the XB24N. It’s a silver bird though and the photo looks to be of an earlier time then this bird. The photo is an OD and gray B24 and the XB24N was unpainted.

There was a B24 with a grafted B17 nose on it, but this doesn’t look like that either

(X)B-24N

It’s a b-24n the first version of the single tail b-24.

If you look carefully you’ll see the nose.
I couldn’t find a better picture.

Could it have been a trials a/c?. An airborne test-bed trying out different nose arrangements, to see which was the best? Perhaps it might have been something to do with the B-32, Privateer, or the Lib?

How about trying the pic on a US based forum?

Maybe it’s a trial installation of a Leigh Light or Turbinlite for Coastal Command anti-submarine work???

Wasn’t there a B-24 fitted with a B-17 nose, or was it the other way round????

Hi Steve

The Privateer came out in mid to late 43 and I believe this picuture to be earlier then that. The Privateer also had a nose turret the same as the later version B-24’s. Thanks all the same.

Possibly a Privateer (?), the big single finned Liberator transport variant? I seem to recall seeing pictures of those with very streamlined glazed noses.

Looks like the nose of a second plane behind the 24 or maybe even a building in the background. Seems to be a regular B24D or possibly an LB30 to me.
