Society For Spitfire Genius.

A Former Lord Mayor and other keen historians have got together to form an appreciation society in memory of Spitfire designer Reginald Mitchell.

Members of the Reginald Mitchell Society are now appealing for other interested parties to get involved, to honour one of the Potteries’ most famous sons.

“The society has been set up in response to the fact Mitchell has never been given full recognition for his part in winning the Second World War,” said founder Ellis Bevan.

Mr Bevan, former Lord Mayor of Stoke-on-Trent, has already attracted support from 22 people after staging a display in Longton Library last year – now he is hoping even more people will come forward.

The first meeting of the Society is planned for early in the New Year.

In September Mitchell beat a host of illustrious names to be named the Greatest Midlander of all time. Mitchell, who was born in Butt Lane, near Newcastle, designed and developed the Spitfire despite being diagnosed with cancer in 1933 at the age of 38.

For more information on the society contact Mr Bevan on 01782 312178.

I would guess that the society is refering to an award such as an Knighthood, sadly he did not live long enought to receive one. As did Avro’s Roy Chadwick?
