Hi S/F,
Thought you might like this piccie. I’ve been exchanging e-mails with a guy called Steve Baker, in the States. All to do with Mosquito radiators & how the de Havilland design might improve the Seafurys oil cooling. Below is one his replies:
Thanks very much for your response. It was just what I was looking for. I currently am on the crew of Race 15 FURIAS. She is a Hawker Sea Fury with a PW 4360 in place of the Bristol. We have two oil coolers in the leading edge of both wings and were looking at a more efficient way of getting this done. I had read an article on the Meredith effect written by Lee Atwood, discussing how it was applied to the Mustang cooling system. He stated most a/c of that time failed to capitalize on thrust gains from the cooling system. An exception to that was the DeHavilland Mosquito. The drawings you sent me show radiators that are an identical installation to our oil coolers, so I guess the only way we could improve on what we have is to incorporate an alcohol boil off system. Thanks for the reply
Thought it might interest you.
Cheers,
Neilly

Hi Seafuryfan,
I’m the same as you. I do like to see good looking aeroplanes in the air, where they should be!
A thought just occurred to me, how about a F/P Forum get together at Reno? Hmmm, might be a touch expensive. Anyone know how many Brownie points I’d need to stay out of the divorce courts 😉

It is this Fury which uses some parts of WH589, but not the majority.

Is it not this Fury that uses the majority of the old Haydon-Baillie WH589?

Hi Neilly,
Thanks for the post – really interesting. I’m not much of a technician I’m afraid, more used to working the systems! But stuff like this increases my technical knowledge and it’s fascinating. I hoe your air racing friends benefit from the Mossies pipework details.
Cheers,
