If anyone fancies being a bit more adventurous and straying into the realms of Region 1 DVDs, you might not realise that your existing DVD player may be able to play these discs with a little tweak. Many of the companies that market players as multi-region (certainly Richer Sounds) simply give you a code to tap in via your remote control. These codes are freely available on the web and I’ve successfully tweaked both my DVD players. Not all players respond to this, but it’s a bonus if yours does. Don’t bother with sites that charge for this since there are plenty that don’t charge.

I agree with the above but just be warned that some dvd players need to have something done to them internally through a chip or something, just be warned it may invalidate any warranty.
Buy a new dvd player if you can that has it on as standard then you wont have to worry too much about the warranty side:)

I to can recommend play, and don’t forget they do pc games as well got my copy of cfs3 from them for 17.99!!! cheapest I have seen any where, local store wanted 25 quid for a second hand copy, as for dvd players, you have to have one they are cool, if you are going for a recorder get the Panasonic (RAM type) one you can do loads of stuff with it, like watching the beginning of a recording whilst it still records the end, very clever!!

There’s a reasonable range of war and aviation related stuff on their site (certainly all the pegasus war file DVDs).They’re also very good on service. I had a DVD order go missing and they despatched another straight away with no fuss.
I will also agree with the above statement and i know other people who use them as well. http://www.play.com/ If you want region 1 dvds then you will need to click on that tab in the dvd section, but you will need a multi region dvd player if your’re in the UK.
I have used richer sounds for purchasing electrical stuff http://www.richersounds.com/

Another general point is that you’d be absolutely insane to ever pay high street prices for DVD’s; try somewhere online like ‘Play.com’ for superb prices.
Example-something like a Lord Of The Rings film will cost you £20+ in HMV, but about £16 on Play!
Another example-the movie ‘Groundhog Day’ is £8.49 on Play, delivery included in the price, and currently £19.99 in HMV!!!

Thanks for the responses everyone.
I’m not surprised that a question such as mine brings up a lot of discussion about conversion to a DVD player etc. I’m already in the DVD camp – bought a multi-region Samsung DVD/VHS (gotta play those old tapes!) combo (+MP3 CD-R etc) for £230 earlier this year – and I endorse above comments about the quality. Played through a hi-fi or 5.1 system is a joy. That’s why I was so interested in the DVDs for us enthusiasts.
EXCELLENT about the commentary-free option – thanks for the specific steers for this. Again, loads of good replies and I thank you all. Keep ’em coming!

Check out Tesco’s, too. They had a big stack of DVD’s complete with 5.1 surround sound for about £130, a short while ago.
As for the DVD’s themselves; the newer ones usually have about 30 minutes of extra stuff on them, compared to a video. I’ve just got The RAF at War. Find the Enemy, Strike the Enemy & the running time is 2hrs.36 mins. Compared to the video which is only 1hr.56 mins. & it’s only a quid more expensive.
Cheers,
Neilly

This year only the Flying Legends and the Kemble Classic Jet Show have the commentary delete option.
Waddington and British Airshows 2003 have very minimal commentary.
RIAT has a better sound mix this year, but there is quite a lot of commentary. The same goes for Biggin Hill.
Also ALL the releases this year are in Widescreen.

Sconnor,do your dvd’s have the option to remove the commentary and the music,i just want to hear the engines,Ta:)

To answer the original question!
1. Yes! Video resolution on any DVD tends to be about 2 1/2 to 3 times better than VHS. The picture is much cleaner as well.
2. Most of the time you will get a perfect still!
3. There are usually extras, such as minicam sequences, multi angle shots etc.
This year a couple of the Airshow DVD’s have commetary delete options.
DVD Recorders will be sub 100 quid by next summer – that’s a long time to be denying yourself the excellent quality of DVD.

50 pounds for a DVD player, in the Netherlands you get one for 50 Euro! Still 50% cheaper! Multiregion, plays DVD-R as well!
DVD-recorders for in the PC go for 250 euros! All from the main street warehouses. I don’t have the prices on hand for a seperate DVD recorder you can plug on your TV.

One thing, you MUST get a multi-region machine, and if you look around, you can also get one that has all the sound abilities you need built in. Mine was £150 from Amazon, a make called Yelo, and it’s multi-region, can play RCE discs, has the full range of rear connections, and decodes it’s own 5.1 AND DTS sound. An absolutely amazing machine! Yelo have since become Kiiro, and their machines are just if not more capable, and are cheaper still.
I usually believe very much that you get what you pay for, but in this case, you get tons of what you don’t pay for!

That really depends on each dvd,the ones that are just copied from an old analogue type video will only be as good as the original video.Dvd’s recorded by up to date digital means will look superior.
As for the price of DVD players, they are now as cheap if not cheaper than video recorders, they just don’t record. The sound system is superb generally on dvd,not only that they will also play,cd’s mp3 ‘s .
I too am waiting for recordable dvd to become a normal part of the system and prices,i have tons of home video to transfer, looking at doing it through the computer as well.
Good luck:D
P.S You can also get dvd players for your computer

Not sure about the DVDs themselves but I will not be buying a DVD machine until the price of a recorder drops – and after what I saw on Saturday in a city High Street precinct I figure that it won’t be long now.
A man was hawking DVD players to shoppers outside a WH Smiths. I thought he’d get moved on shortly since the police are usually hot on that sort of thing – only to discover that (according to a loud-mouthed passer-by) that he was in fact the branch manager of WH Smiths (explains the uniform!) and it was apparently all above board.
£49 for a top brand name (although at this time of night I can’t remember which!) DVD player? Ha! Anyone still use their original VHS player from the days when recorders were expensive? Think I’ll wait.
Flood.
