kiosk at TFC hanger?, this is no joe king style post!
Hey guys i was wondering if you could help me with some uni work, if there was a kiosk in the TFC hanger would you guys use it? (kiosk -touch screen computer).
The kiosk would have news of the restorations, information on each aircraft, and the dates of airshows.
Could i have some feedback at what you guys think?

Here’s a link to the content of some touch-screen kiosks that are in the EAA Museum. (You will need a broadband connection).
These were designed so that, with minimal extra effort, they could also be put on the web.
The point being that you get two projects for the price of one.

Doughnut’s suggestions are very good. A small caviat though is that web navigation isn’t always a good exact match for kiosk navigation – so I’d suggest a slightly modified version of the site might be easier. A kiosk with a trackball, 2 buttons and no keyboard is generally held to be the best. A touchscreen is good, but they are expensive and do seem to be trouble prone in my experience here.

If TFC thinks that an interactive computor display is really needed then surely the best way to provide such information is via the internet. Rather than reinventing the wheel why not put effort into improving and most importantly keeping upto date the existing web site. This improved web site could then be provided ‘live’ to the hangar floor. I would guess that the boffins could arrange some sort of touch screen / ‘big button’ control system to navigate around the TFC website.
I think that the aviation viewing terrace at Birmingham airport has a simlar system. They also have user-controlled web cam. Could such a web cam system be installed in the TFC hangar, it could be fun watching the Engineers at work.

I hope they don’t plonk it in front of the aircraft or it makes silly noises
That’s no way to talk about TFC engineers 😀

Alot of visitors are not english, although they probably speak it better than most of us.It would be a bonus for them if it was multi lingual.
I hope they don’t plonk it in front of the aircraft or it makes silly noises;)

im considering making a prototype system for my uni coursework?
thanks guys for your feedback. I have to design a system with you guys in mind?
what kinda things would you like the kiosk to do?

Thanks JDK, we didn’t have any problems with the IT side of what we want to do and still don’t, it’s purely a matter of finding a donor of equipment and associated support time. Always a problem, always will be…. unfortunately. I found that people came forward with the best of intentions but lost interest in the detail.

Good idea,
Lots of people use IT who won’t talk to real people, and vice versa. I’d say it’s a good idea, as some people currently NOT asking would use it & be better informed, and some who ask now would be happy to use it rather than taking engineer time. As someone working in a museum with IT, I’d be happy to advise if that would help, Grayfly. PM or here.

This was considered a number of years ago by Friends of TFC, a kind donor was willing to donate the screens and technology, however on further research the technology available would not support what we wanted to do.
Time and IT has progressed, so if someone is willing to donate the necessary time and equipment, let’s talk!!

From a personal point of view I probably wouldn’t use it. When I visited Duxford a couple of weeks ago I found all the guys at TFC very helpfull and friendly regarding information over the aircraft, those restorations are extremely detailed and well researched, they will be beautiful aircraft when once they are completed.
However I guess that this sort of thing would be useful to the engineers, that way they wouldn’t keep getting disturbed by people such as myself.
The same thing could be applied in the ARCO section of the hanger (where again I received nothing but help from the guys).
