More guessing games!

This summer I had the opportunity to visit the American Museum in Berlin. Right at the entrance, someone had left a low wing four engine tailtragger, that had been used in the airlift, I believe. They even had the good sense to jack it up so the wheels wouldn’t go flat! Being of “dinosaur” vintage, I’m not sure, but I thought someone had said, “Hanson 605.” Anyone out there that can help? This has to be easier than jumping into the North Sea for information!

Eddie, what an astute question!

Of course! 360° of view. And all of it waterfront property (at low tide)

I certainly was that night… sheesh… I’ve never, ever touched Vodka since… 🙁

As for photo’s of the Checkpoint hut, yeah, I’d love to see them. I wasn’t really focussing all that well last time… :p

Steve, surely you’re not the drunk from St Ives of limerick fame?????????

I have other photos of the current check point and the wall if you were interested.
Really interested, so don’t answer out of misguided politeness!!!!

And curiosity compells me to ask, what came first, the grounding, or the misfit?

(All questions solely for the historical archive) And if you believe that, then I have some property for sale at an excellent price, just 10 miles south of where we live.

Don, I’m happy to bow to your more recent knowledge of her location. Nice to see the Checkpoint Charlie gaurd hut survives. I last saw that while I was on an RAF bus coming back in from the East and singing ‘The Boys Are Back In Town’. But then, in the immortal words of Roly Birkin, I was very, very drunk… 😀

yes, that’s what it said in the above page;

TG503 at the Allied Museum Berlin. One of the aircraft used to airlift supplies to Berlin during the Soviet blockade in 1948-49. The aircraft was refurbished by Royal Airforce personnel in May 1998 and donated to the Allied Museum in Berlin-Zehlendorf.

All the mysteries solved. You chaps may have the rest of the day/evening off!

Thanks

And I seem to remember that it did actually take part in the Airlift (seem to recall stories of coal dust still being found inside her during overhauls years later)

Thanks, Moondance, for the particulars.

Presumably, its Hastings T.5 TG503 (with radome removed to restore it to C.1 configuration), ex Strike Command Bombing School, Bomber Command Bombing School etc., which was preserved at Gatow.

I could be wrong for the first time today (1300Z = 9:00 AM EDST), but this was at the American Forces Museum, in the “high rent” suburban section of Berlin, where they had the actual Checkpoint Charlie guardhouse and a display of the underground wiretapping and photographs in another building. This area was never an airport and the “Hastings” is the only aircraft on display.

Ah yes, that’ll be the ex RAF Gatow gate guard Hastings. We had out ATC Camp photo taken in front of that in August 1989. 😀

Back in those days she was parked on the grass just inside the main gate, but it looks like she’s now out on the airfield itself, near the hangers. Glad she’s survived and is being looked after. 🙂

Can you tell me exactly where this aircraft is please, and also are there any other aircraft at the museum ? Last time I was in Berlin , I went to Gatow Luftwaff museum, but I never found the Hastings, is there also a C-47 and a Chipmunk ?

‘Tis quite a while since I was a “Junior” anything!

No. it was locked up tight. Not even any scaffolding to take a peek inside.

Its a Hastings!

Looks like a Handley Page Hastings to me. It looks in great shape as well! Were you able to get inside and have a look?
