REMAINS OF BOMBER PILOT FOUND FROM 1941
The Ministry of Defence is attempting
to find the Lincolnshire family of a
bomber pilot who was shot down over
Europe during World War II.
Pilot Officer Peter Bird’s Stirling
aircraft crashed into a ploughed field
on May 10, 1941.
Recent excavations at the village of
Opmeer, in the northern Netherlands,
have found the plane and human remains.
The MoD is asking for relatives of
Pilot Officer Bird, a reservist who
lived in Gainsborough, to get in touch.

Pilot Officer Bird was part of the crew of a 15 Squadron Stirling I, N3654 LS-B which was lost on the night of the 10/11 May, 1941 on an operation to Berlin.
The crew were:
W/C H R Dale
P/O P R S Bird
Sgat F A S Smith
P/O D McL Campbell RNZAF
Sgt E R Lucas RNZAF
Sgt N H Nuttall
Sgt S P Plumb
All were killed and with the exception of W/C Dale, are commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial. W/C Dale is buried in Bergen Cemetery.
The aircraft was shot down by Oblt. Egmont Prinz zur Lippe Weissenfeld of 4/NJG1.
