Am I the only one who finds the Science Museums collection at Wroughton totally pointless? They open the hangars once or twice a year and thats it. Apart from the exercise of preserviving some important aircraft there seems to be no impetus or orgization behind the collection. Why has there never been any expansion of the collection in the last 15 years. Since the RN moved out there are masses of space for other aircraft. This one has always puzzled me, anybody have any inside information?

according to their website they also do tours on a weds but need to book in advance… I’ve not been but apparently theres also lots of non-aviation related ‘stuff’…
also I noticed onthe PPRuNe forum that theres a proposal to “dig up the runway and plant trees”

I’ve always figured that a reserve collection is needed if the main one goes up in smoke – the logic being that the nation should be left with something.
It might have been standard policy for years and makes sense to me – besides, it preserves plenty of otherwise scrapped historic aircraft.
I can see your point about the collection just sort of being there, but perhaps this appears to be so because its primary function is not to display aircraft to the public – which I imagine would be a much more costly exercise because of health and safety rules, permanent visitor facilities etc.
