When Graham Berry visited INTERNATIONAL MUSEUM 1939-1945 in Holland a small strange object was shown to him that came from the wreckage of Sqn Ldr Joe Berry’s Tempest SD-F(EJ600).
Coming from the cockpit area it is a small flattened metal tin/steel bottle/jar, like an ink well with a screw top. An idea is that the container held the water die. (If an aircraft had to ditch in the sea, the pilot would pour this die into the water to leave a coloured mark for the rescue aircraft to see.)
Any ideas or clues? Thanks in advance!

No glass or wire in that part of the lamp old chap. The guard (brass) would have had glass init which obviously has gone. If you look carefully there will be two small screw holes which were used to scre it to a standard 5C/793 bakelite bulb holder. Your reflector (for want of a better word) has come away form this part (which would have had the wires etc in it).
At last a non heavy thread….keep it up

Thanks for the replys so far.
Yes, I agree with all of you. The cockpit night lights were my first guess too when Graham asked me. But why no glass or wires attached? Shouldn’t it be that after a crash?

It looks to me like a cover for the Ultra Violet lights. (That is also what is shown on the above picture)
Common on most RAF aircraft up to Canberra/Hunter/Vampire era
Hope this helps!!

I think you are right Bigglesworth, take a look at the two item sixes one either side of the cockpit.
The attached is taken from http://user.tninet.se/~ytm843e/tempest.htm
where they ask the same question funnily enough.
Perhaps Ashley could put her duster down at DX for a moment to nip over and have a look at the Typhoon cockpit section for us, I think it has the same arrangement.

A shade/cover for cockpit night lighting perhaps?
I think for a dye container it is perhaps a bit small…
