To add to the information already posted, I’ve dug out RAF Form 3822 (my ATC Record of Service). I only flew with one Chippie at Turnhouse and it was WK585. Every time I went I seemed to end up with the same one – I even got it when I was at Annual Camp at Kinloss, although it certainly wasn’t the only one at Turnhouse.

Merlin – nope wasn’t me on Friday unfortunately.

Monday broke like most Glasgow Fair[1] mondays, low cloud and showers. So our idea of heading west from Cumbernauld, down the Clyde and back was abandonded, so we just bumbled about over Stirling and the valley up to Perth. Still it was a very enjoyable hour, and I realised how much I like chippies.

[1] Glasgow Fair – a local holiday

So here is a shot of the approach to Perth.

Hi Ken,

So that wasnt you I seen out at EF on Friday.

The chippie was out doing lazy aeros over EF on Friday and had wished I had my camera with me as I could have posted some photos of you from the ground had it been you of course which is appears wasnt.

Enjoy your flight if its anything half as good as the flight I saw on Friday you will enjoy yourself.

Take time out to get up here Steve , accommodation is cheap and plentiful in North Berwick , we could probably persuade Keith McKenzie to pop down too , I toured the hangars with him on Saturday it was fascinating and a pleasure , I don’t think I spoke for about 2 hrs , just listened , Keith even ended up explaining how the supercharger worked on a Griffon to the chaps who were restoring it , a very good day out , even the wive’s enjoyed it !!

Alistair

I was at the fence in front of the commentary bus. There was a family with those small tent wind beakers, so parked myself in front of them 😉

I though it was a well balanced display, and probably the first show I’ve been to where all the planes in the list showed. Agree about the Sea Vixen and Canberra and was great to see the T33 in the air.

Der – thanks for the info, unfortunately my ATC logbook has gone awol. Squadron Prints have WP860 in their list as a Turnhouse Chippie, which is why I asked.

Chippies at Turnhouse were, as I remember from my ATC days- WB567(with Spitfire style mirror!), WP967, WZ875. I think it was the last one that was wrecked in a crash beside Loch Glow, with ATC Cadet on board, about 1978. It was replaced with another, but it wasnt the one at East Fortune.Just cant remember the serial.
Those flights were great fun-seat parachute and leather helmet ,rubber mask with microphone and your own cockpit.

Excellent photos Ken , where were you standing about ?? , we were the idiots standing on the roof of my Volvo at the end of the carpark – I though the Canberra and Sea Vixen were cracking !!! , and the finish on the Beech looked amazing – bet that takes some polishing !!.

Thanks for the kind words, not my first flight in a chippie, but haven’t flown in one since I was in the ATC in the early 70’s, indeed I may even have flown in this one (WP860) I understand it was based at Turnhouse, can anyone confirm?

Ah, I was wondering whether anyone had got some shots from East Fortune. Looks like a good show. Some very nice shots there Ken, and congratulations on winning the Chipmunk flight. If it’s your first go in a Chippie, believe me, you’ll be hooked! 😀

This was the only visiting aircraft on the ground. The owner was running a raffle for a 1 hour flight, guess who won? (now where is the smug smiley:D )
