Duxford today

Did anyone else go to the Spitfire day at Duxford?
Great day out with some lovely displays from Historic Aircraft Collection’s MKV, Shuttleworth’s MKV and MKIV SM832 with Steven Grey at the controls. Plus three of Historic Flying’s Spits enjoying a rare day out in the static park along with the IWM’s Mk22.
Plus the La9 was in the OFMC hanger.

Indeed what a day!

My Dad passed away a while ago and it would have been so good to have shared it with him. As I’m sure we all are, he was a great fan of the BBMF.

But just seeing the faces and hearing the applause of everyone else around me just brought a lump to my throat.

Congratulations to everyone involved and heres to the next 50 years!

I thought it was relevant due to the association of the type with the Suez campaign and as a reminder of Anglo-French air force cooperation at the time.

Roger – I think it’s more to do with what thy can realistically hangar and a realisation that the Mystere IV doesn’t have a significant story to tell within the remit of the IWM or indeed British aviation full stop.

The clash between these NMUSAF-owned airframes in the UK and Lottery funding rules goes on. I wonder if this had any bearing on the IWM’s decision to dispose of the Mystere?

I can confirm it was in excellent ‘nick’ the day we took the ‘cannon’ out of the airframe ready for its journey back to the US. Not an easy task after a few years of grease & dirt doing its best to harden up all the fittings.

The fuselage from memory was coated in a clear gloss overall; which really helped it from the elements.

It should have gone many months before but the slot back in a C-5 was lost at Mildenhall and the aircraft has waited until now. 😉

a number are now past their best

I’m not surprised then that the LAWM are losing theirs. The F-100 looks like nothing has been done to it since it arrived. At least it hasnt yet gone the way of the 2 Vampires they had once….

The Mysteres,T-33’s and F-100’s were all MAP funded. In a deal sorted out by Newark Air Museum these types were made available on loan from the USAF museum to suitable groups under the proviso of a picture once a year to prove their condition. Of the large numbers supplied – a number are now past their best and some groups are now interested in disposing of them. This has to be done through the USAF – if the machine is clearly not worth saving they will arrange collection and it will be scrapped. The Duxford Mystere was the best example in the U.K and the USAF museum decided to keep it and take it to the U.S when Duxford declared it surplus.

I heard ‘a rumour’ that the Lashenden Air Warfare Museum at Headcorn are to lose both their F-100F, and the Mystere IV, something to do with the Mutual Assistance Programme that funded them in the first place. The F-100F is apparently going back to a museum in the States and the Mystere is to be scrapped.

Its a shame, because the F-100F is (I think) the only one preserved in the UK and is quite a rare beast over here. I have very fond memories of walking around Sculthorpe in 1975 or 76 and seeing them all parked there.
