Reno Air races.

I’m going to this years air races for the first time. If any members of the forum can offer any advice for a first time visitor.

How close to action are you ? Is a 400mm lens long enough, best place to watch (other than on a pylon!) Times to arrive etc..

Any help would be much appreciated.

Take lots of money. Gamble at the breakfast table – I’m serious.

You will get right up close to the aircraft on the ground. In the air, with the exception of the T6s the aircraft spread out around the course. This really does not matter. Take binoculars if you can. The atmosphere is electric. You don’t need to get there particularly early. There are aerobatic displays before the races and several races of different classes each day. The crowd line is the closest you will get to the flying. There is a pylon out to the east which is outside the showground. I went there once, but prefered the showground. The aircraft circle behind the leader before the leader climbs away and the race begins. This is one opportunity to get the aircraft closer together for a photo. If you look at the photos taken by others in the past, you will find it is quite difficult to photograph. I think the activities on the ground, which is akin to Formula 1 pits is more fascinating.

Gamble in the evenings.

Don’t forget to walk down the the Reno High Streeet. I don’t know if they still do it, but they used to fly static display aircraft into Reno International Airport and taxi them to the high st. at 2am and then just park them there for the week – yes – in the street!

The races are not at Reno International Airport, but at Stead airport to the north.

Gamble.

Make friends and get invited to the after-show parties. All the hotels in the area are decked out to receive aviators. Take lots of money!! My Repetition is intentional! Have fun.
