For fifteen very old men Friday 23rd was a very significant day.
Having spent a very significant period of their lives on and around the airfield at Knettishall on the Suffolk / Norfolk border, they returned to see it again for what is almost inevitably the final time.
Nothing I can write will convey just what it felt like to be there, however the grin across the face of the buffoon on the left tells just about what it was like to be there.
The hero on the right is Floyd (Marc) Marcusson, top turret gunner from the B17 ‘Chiseller’s Daddies’ – the name taken from a popular song of the time.
They arrived at the field by coach. From all around the UK light aircraft had arrived, and all who were willing and able (most) to do it were flown across some of the old landmarks – Thorpe Abbotts, home of the Bloody Hundredth (Whose loss rate was actually little worse than the unsung 388ths), Diss and Southwold assembly points, Halesworth, home to the only 8th Air Force ETO Medal of Honor winner, Eye and Fersfield, base for the Aphrodite project. The latter had been worked on by one of the veterans. It was this project that took the life of the elder brother of the future President Jack Kennedy.
Maurice Hammonds Harvard, replete with a Yak 11 Fan in the back did a couple of passes and landed. It was confidently identified as a P47 by one of the veterans, I just hope he hadn’t been a gunner. (In truth, if I can even stand-up to watch an aircraft at his age I’d be satiisfied. And it does have a chequered cowling)
More follows when time allows.

Changing the subject slightly, there is an annual event where old VETs get to fly again. They are always looking for volunteer pilots.
Check out:

I can strongly recommend it.

No,
The Forum representatives were sat on a wall at the other side of the cemetery.
Not speaking to each other
But I do recall the A2!

FAO Moggy & Yakrider
There wasn’t a chap with an A-2 with the artwork “Little Friend” close by at Madingley was there.
I was there laying the wreath on behalf of the 361st FG.
Really must meet up sometime intentionally.
Cheers

As one who has researched the 388th’s B-7G “Skipper “an” the Kids” I was overwhelmed to see these true heroes return; two in particular who flew Skipper during combat. Oreste Leto (not Marc Marcusson as mentioned in the first photo) was the last navigator to fly Skipper before she was lost in December 1944. Oreste kindly brought over his fantastic A-2 jacket with “Skipper “an” the Kids” on the back – fantastic! Marc Marcusson was TT/Eng on Skipper and flew on the famous raid to Brux when “Skipper “an” the Kids” was lead ship and the 388th received the DUC – Marc also claimed a confirmed Me109 as destroyed during that great day.
Hi Graham,
Really glad you enjoyed it. Which aircraft did you fly in at the reunion?
Can you just clarify the above please?
Marc himself told me he was top turret on ‘Chiseller’s Daddies’, but nobody has ever mentioned him being on ‘Skipper’ – least of all in the photograph above.

Hi Guys,
As I was fortunate enough to fly over the “disuseds” from Knettishall during the reunion I would just like to add my thoughts to what was a once in a lifetime opportunity. Hear hear!
A fantastic effort from everyone involved. Must have been quite an emotional day for everyone who was there.

Moggy.
Another heartwarming thread. It’s good to think that some of these veterans are getting the chance of a final flight from Knettishall. Must have been a great experience to be there. Our thanks should go to all those who made it possible, just a small part of repaying the massive debt we owe.
Thanks also to YakRider for the great pics from Madingley.

And don’t forget
The ‘Flyers’.
Guys who brought aircraft at their own expense, through not particularly wonderful weather just to give the veterans a ride over E Anglia.
I won’t name check them all here, suffice to say you can see aircraft from the locality, Cambridge and Southend. Further afield – Rochester, Bidford and Elstree. Plus (without a map) the greatest distance travelled Shoreham via Cranfield.
(Some of the aircraft almost make it into FlyPast under their own right) 😉

I’d still like to see the field filled with B17s though

Credit where credit is due
Last time Knettishall had a controller he was an American, snug in a (long since demolished) tower.
We got Vintage ATCO standing in the breeze behind his Renault 🙂
Thanks are owed.

And the 388th at Knettishall still has an MT Section (Or Motor Pool as our US chums would have it)

How stupid! A forum meet-up and we didn’t know it. Considering I also missed YAK11Fan two days earlier I’m not doing too well.
Any chance you could mail me a large file of the first of the Fortress images you posted to the e-mail address below? I’d like to include it on something I am doing for the Coney Weston Swan
