Amsterdam surprise!

This afternoon, one of the last flying (and believed to be the last civil one operated) Antonov 22s arrived at Schiphol to pick up a Bell helicopter that had to be transported to somewhere in the Gulf. The huge AN-22 spend some 3 1/2 hours in Holland. Photo was taken while rolling towards the runway with a 500 mm lens. BW Roger

Yes, I have some 200 more, but that will be a bit boring I think. I’ll post another one at the airliners forum in 5 minutes. BW Roger

Very very nice! Nice to see that at least one is left flying. Great pics of it Roger.

Do you have any more?

Yep. Far less boring than the 60sqn Andovers (and earlier on Pembrokes) at Wildenrath which came over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over…

Most of the circuit flying was done by resident IL-76es though. A bit feeble, in comparison.

Ah yes, the mighty Anteius!

I’d love to see one of these come into Coventry, but I think there would be a problem with the airport only having 6,000ft of slab to play with!!

Still, nice photo Roger.

Ahh… sometimes even Schiphol can be worthwile.

This one is actually the only one which was ever flown by a civilian operator, all the other “Aeroflot” birds flew actually with the VVS-VTA (the Air Transport Aviation of the Soviet Air Force) from Ivanovo, Tver-Migalovo and (prior to the An-124’s introduction) Sescha. Although they were officially withdrawn in 2000, about eight were taken back into service at Migalovo the following year. The last time i saw an operational one was in August 2001, when one was at the MiG plant at Lukhovitsi. Best An-22 experience however was when i saw one performing a few touch&go’s at Novgorod-Krechevitsy (an Il-76 base) in 1996.
