To be a pedantic git,as per usual,I should point out that the Beau was called Whispering Death as opposed to Whistling Death. The latter was allegedly applied to the F4U Corsair. There’s been some conjecture about what nicknames were given to which aircraft and when those nicknames actually started to be used. A recent discovery is that the P47 Thunderbolt was never known as the ‘Jug’ during it’s operational life, and appears to have crept in somewhere along the way instead.Apparently Roger A Freeman got some funny looks when he started talking about Jugs at a 56th FG reunion recently-none of the veterans knew what he was talking about!

Yeah, I guess yoy’re right on that one, Steve. Beauty in the eye of the beholder & all that crap:p

I, too, would love to see & hear a Beaufighter in the air. Should be a superb sight & it’ll interesting to hear the Hercs. & to hear why the japs called the Beau “Whistling Death”!

It’s all a bit subjective really. Yes, the Centaurus is a magnificent sounding beast, and yes, the sound of a set of Merlins (six, ideally… πŸ˜€ ) rumbling away in the distance on a hot summers day is always enough to send shivers down my spine. But the one(s) I’m still dying to hear are a pair of Hercs at max chat, closely followed by a lovely big Beau… πŸ˜€

Tony is most definitely right (about the Merlin that is:p ). Not only is it the best aero sound around, it’s one of the most beautiful pieces of engineering, too!

Digby, how more real can I get?! I am big, fat and ugly and love Merlins (I suppose I am biased…I own a Merlin but not a Centaurus)

I have a small mpeg movie (1.4 meg if you call that small) lasts about 15 seconds, of a bbmf flypast with sound and everything, If anyone would like to β€œhost” it and put the link here we can all hear what 5 merlins and a griffon look and sound like in the air. There is no annoying commentary or music..just the sound of lovely merlins.

Be very interesting to hear the differences between the Tempest and the Fury when the two hopefully perform together at Flying Legends 2004/5!

Hi All,

2 Merlins in one airframe – A Mosquito, IS the best aero sound, around:) Having said that, what about the Napier Sabre? That sounds pretty damn awesome, too!

Allison

I got a CD a while back featuring the Allison in full song while strapped to a P-40. I’m a big Merlin fan, but I tell you, this was AWESOME. If you’ve got this engine on CD and usually skip it, check it out.

I agree with Geedee…..the sound of a Merlin at full chat is gorgeous. The centauraus is boring compared with it!!

Hmmmm…Merlin soundtracks ?

Get the Aero Sounds cd. Mass scrambles of Spit’s, Hurri’s, Warbird formation flyby’s, Mossies, 109’s, …tell you mate it makes the hairs stand up on the back of your neck !!!!…especially when you turn up the bass on the HI FI and crank the volume up abit….actually quite a bit…just enough so’s the windows are rattling and you cant hear the neighbuors banging on the wall

Face it….nothing, but nothing beats the bellow from a Merlin on full song !!!!!!!
