Airshows This Year

Out of interest, what airshows is everyone getting to this year, and what display are you most looking forward to? I aim to attend:

May – Duxford, either Shuttleworth or North Weald Aerofair

June – Biggin Hill and possible a couple of Shuttleworths

July – Legends, maybe RIAT

September – Shoreham, Duxford and Shuttleworth Evening show

October – Shuttleworth and Duxford

I might get to a few more over the course of the season. I’d love to get to Coventry and Kemble, although the latter is too far for me to travel. Also must do Waddington one year.

We’ll do Waddington as we do every year, ‘though sometimes I wonder if it’s habit. Bring back Finningley!
Just noticed in Flypast there’s one at Breighton on Monday. Been threatening to go there for a few years and as I haven’t finished reviving my car for the Kit Car show at Stoneleigh we might give it a try, weather permitting.

Here’s a list of museum aircraft appearing at the show, to give you an idea of the logistics involved. Sorry if I have missed any:

Lynx and Whirlwind – British Rotorcraft Museum

SR53, Meteor Prototype, Pioneer, Be2b and Cygnet – RAF Museum

Bleriot, P1127, Camel, Avro 504 and Fury Replicas – Brooklands

Wright Flyer Replica, Be2C, Avro 504 and Blackburn Mercury – Elvington

Just a thought, but might these museum exhbits be kept inside a tent/marquee over the weekend to shield them from the weather?

Being based in Glasgow am rather limited, but will def be going to:

Festival of Flight (East Fortune), Leuchars
and make a long weekend in Sept for Duxford and Shuttleworth.

Might also head down to Sunderland for their free show in July

Blimey, that worries me. 🙁 RIAT isn’t exactly famed for its organisational excellence. Picture the scene – they take some of our most historically significant airframes out of the relative safety of museums such as Hendon and Elvington, dismantle them, road them to Fairford where they’re potentially subjected to all sorts of abuse, and then go through the whole rigmarole to get them back to their museums. Does anyone on here honestly believe that’s going to go without a hitch? Can you imagine the outcry if such aircraft as the Typhoon, Halifax, Vimy, etc suffer any damage as a result of this? 😡

I’ve just seen the latest additions to RIAT. I must say, it looks like it’ll be a cracker, definately making up for last year.

Goodies include: French Navy Rafale and Hawkeye, Swiss Mirage III, Slovak MiG 29, B1B (with all bar the Hawkeye flying), and the possiblity of Eurofighter, Concorde and the Russian Knights all attending.

I’m committed to the Duxford shows, but other than that I shall leave my decisions in the hands of the good old British weather

Desireable though would be Shuttleworth (I really must see the LVG fly before it is finally grounded at the end of the season), Kemble Classic Jets and Coventry.

I will be doing Abingdon this weekend, then:-
Coventry at the end of May- Previous Coventry shows have been good.
Kemble classic jets – a must
Waddington- Excellent VFM last year
RIAT can get stuffed- Poor VFM any year (I will go for departures on the monday)
Legends- Not been for last two years, although I read that not much has changed.
At least two visits to Old Warden and another to Duxford- cant survive a winter without a fix of Shuttleworth and its the LGV’s last flying year.
DH Moth rally hopefully- again missed this last two years, a good event
One of the proms concerts (might be as one of the above mentioned visits)-these seem to be on the increase so should be able to make one of them.
Yeovilton – I enjoyed this last year, its a bit different, although the sun can be a bugger because its in your face all day, so not very good for photos.
So all in all a quiet year.

Hi tfcep120

Your list of airshows seems much the same as mine.

What about August? Try Eastbourne, sit on the beach in the sunshine and watch planes fly by all day, or if your into photography go up on Beachy Head and you get some great topside views.

Might try Little Gransden this year as a lot of people on here have said good things about it.

6 days to go untill Duxford…

Cheers for that list tfcep120. Looks like a real good line up. Good to see a nimrod and the DC-3 of Air Atlantique in there. The wright flyer… one word… speechless! Can’t wait to see the creation of what kicked flying off! 🙂

Well up here in Scotland and not having the money to travel to Duxford etc. I will be going to East Fortune Festival of Flight and as usual should be a great all round show and I should be going to Leuchars Airshow subject to it still going ahead which at the last time I looked at the website it was a go.

At the moment the only show that I’ll be at this year is 1st June at Shuttleworth as it also happens to be The British Sportscar day, where I shall be showing my car.

I would like to do Lowestoft, Little Gransden and Woodchurch, but time will tell if I get the chance.

Yes, Biggin should be particularly good this year. I’m not sure if you know, but a replica of the Wright Flyer has been added to the flying list (taken from their website):

The Royal Air Force

•The Red Arrows
•Tornado F3
•Jaguar GR1
•Hawk
•Tucano
•Battle of Britain Memorial Flight:Spitfire , Hurricane, Lancaster
Nimrod

Royal Navy

•Firefly
Swordfish

Civilian

•Air Atlantique DC3 & DC6
•B17 Flying Fortress
•Firebird Aerobatics Extra 300 Duo
Bleriot
•Breitling Corsair P40, P51 & Spitfire
•Goldair Sukhoi 26
Air Atlantique DC3
Utterly Butterly Flying Circus – Girls on Wing
Spirit of St Louis
Catalina Flying Boat
Albatross Flying Boat
Wright Flyer Replica

I also read on another site that they intend to formate the Firefly with the F86 Sabre to commemerate the 60th anniversary of the end of the Korean War. Plus the Blenheim and Connie may appear, while the Dutch, Americans and Belgians have been invited. As well as that, more aircrat for the 100 years of flight theme are still to be confirmed eg. World War One types and some classic jets.

Biggin hill I am lloking forward to, as its focused around the 100 years of flight. 🙂
