Caught an item on Auto Mundial tonoght about the Cadillac Sixteen Concept car. What caught my eye?
This –
The Cadillac Sixteen’s 32-valve V-16 concept engine displaces 13.6 liters and is mated to a four-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission. The engine features fuel-saving Displacement on Demand technology, debuting in 2004 on some 2005 GM models, which shuts down half of the cylinders during most driving conditions and automatically and seamlessly reactivates them for more demanding conditions, such as brisk acceleration or load hauling cylinders when the driver needs the engine’s full power. The engine produces 1000 horsepower and 1000 lbs.-ft. of torque.

If it ever gets the go ahead could this engine or a variant of it be used in place of ever decreasing numbers of Merlins?

Fair do’s though, that must be one hell of an engine, and I’m sure it must have some aero applications-if that mad bloke from Wiltshire could build a wooden ‘Spitfire’ and fly it with a converted Jaguar V12, I’m sure this thing could be made to fly too! 😀

Wonder what it sounds like with open pipes?:D

Actually you cheeky beggers, official policy from WAY up high in the MoD is to remove the engines from the Spits and Hurricanes to keep the Lanc airworthy ‘at all costs’-as actually happened some years back on the BBMF-early nineties if memory serves.
So there, with knobs on! 😉

or a couple of hurricanes a spitfire and a defient!

If there is going to be a storage of Merlins (which would doubt) the obvious solution is to ground the Lanc use the engines to power a pair of Mossie’s 🙂 🙂 🙂

It looks quite a bit smaller than a merlin leaving loads of space under the cowling for your sandwiches. It could also do with a supercharger all engines should have one.
On a more serious note are there any merlin “spares” being made. If not some kind of engine solution will have to be found otherwise no more spitfies or lancasters.

Wonder what rpm it produces that power at?
You’ll probably need a gearbox to drive the prop.

Probably only weighs about one tenth what a Merlin does, too. Certainly has the looks.
