Just to let everyone interested in the UK know, there’s a two-part Dambusters program being shown on Channel 4 on Monday 7th April, at 9pm-10.30, and the following Monday.
Apparently, this is the one where modern RAF personnel try to recreate the raid, using ‘one of only two surviving Lancasters’ with computer simulation technology. They travel to Canada to fly the Lancaster, so I assume that’s FM213 that’ll be shown, and Flight Engineer Ray Grayston from AJ-N speaks about the raid for the very first time.
(All info from (Radio Times)
Sounds promising! 🙂

Yeah, on the whole, a good show and a refreshing way at looking at the raid. It’s great that they spread it over two shows, rather than cramming it into one, and Lucy is STILL better looking than Guy Gibson!!! 😉

codeword
re: the codeword not being edited out of the film on tv, it took me by surprise a bit because it definitely was last time I saw it on TV (made a nonsense of the scene where Gibson is told about his dog). Maybe it was different channels, or maybe we’re just a tad less PC than a couple of years ago?
Enjoyed the sim program, had a couple of things in it that I didn’t know, eg. they didn’t like the wooden sight and used a bit of string.
Regardless, the program underlined the fact the raid was an extraordinary feat of airmanship.

I was suprised that they didn’t edit it out of the film on sunday!

Well done those chaps, even if they did die in training and would never have been on the raid!
For authenticity why didn’t the bod on the panel who took the part of Gibson in offering helpful advice get his dog run over the day before?
And another thing – nobody yelled out the codeword for a success. Wonder why?

“I thought it was a pretty good go at it seeing that the modern RAF are trained to play with computers and then the computers do all the hard work.”
There’s still alot of seat of the pants operating out here….I’m pleased to tell any bomber enthusiasts out there that the RAF Air Gunner is still alive and kicking! My Grandfather was a Halifax tail gunner on 644 Sqn (got his log book if anyone is interested, he was on the same SOE op as the ‘Canadian’ Halifax) – I’m carrying on the family tradition by gunning on helicopters (going on a night shoot tommorow 🙂 It’s a pity the Chinook footage wasn’t a minigun…..

One thing I found strange was the fact that they had the bomb whistling as it dropped from the aircraft, surely this is not true !!!!
Otherwise I found it quite interesting and well done to the greater extent.

I thought it was a pretty good go at it seeing that the modern RAF are trained to play with computers and then the computers do all the hard work. I was wondering why they as RAF crews did not have access to BBMF’s Lanc. Why go all the way to Canada when we’ve got one here?

Ashley- I’m impressed you spelt my surname correctly even though I didn’t and made a mistake when I first set my forum account up!
With your contacts at Duxford have you any idea which two Dambusters will be attending the May Airshow?
thanks

Finally watched the first episode last night having recorded it to watch MiB (Again)
Whilst not a brilliant programme I certainly thought
1) It was an interesting concept
2) It made a change from programmes about doing-up and selling your house (A genre only ever made acceptable by the presence on screen of Anna Ryder Richardson)
I certainly will be watching episode 2 to see how they get on.
As a passing thought – I take what somebody said about modern as opposed to period R/T, but remember we are all taught “Aviate, Navigate, Communicate” in strictly that order.
The girlie pilot was working very hard in that simulator, she really wants to win and I’m certain that her R/T was virtually automatic, all her conscious effort was going into the ‘flying’.
That’s what training is all about, making the inessential things automatic so that you can concentrate on staying alive and completing the mission. She was just following her training.

In addition…there is a lovely colour photograph of Guy Gibson sat reading surrounded by poppies in Richard Holmes’ ‘The Second World War In Photographs” published by the IWM in 2000

David Kavanagh has already answered Lancman’s question regarding the colour footage of Guy Gibson…I would just like to add that the Imperial War Museum also has colour photographs of Gibson too…
It is now possible to search nearly 60,000 records on the IWM website at:
http://www.iwmcollections.org.uk/
I believe the colour footage of Guy Gibson was taken from the following:

begs the question…….
so the BBMF lanc was ‘down’ at the time of filming then?
otherwise a very good program, the ‘simulator’ was laughable as flight sim/combat sim could only really be classed as a higher quality game…..I doubt the lanc characteristics are very good in it, but hey…its only a program!
I like the pintle mounted 50 cals used in the ‘turrets’

I was totally unaware that there was a book to go with the series, so thanks for the heads up David! (I’m surprised C4 didn’t plug it at the episodes end)

Lancman have you not brought the book of the series yet? “The Dambusters” by John Sweetman etc. It says that the colour film of Gibson, there are stills in the book, were found at the IWM and were obviously never before seen.
If you get it before next week however, you will find out if Lucy and crew succeed or not (I won’t spoil the surprise!)
