Visited the BBMF this morning, here’s the latest……..
The dakota has been repainted. Earth/Green camo on the top surfaces and eggshell underneith. Couldn’t see the squadron markings due to the way it was parked outside sadly though. It looks great though.
The BBMF also has a new Spitfire, well kind of 🙂 , parked in the hanger was Two seater spitfire MJ627 (serial may be slightly off as it is off the top of my head) although there seemed to be some confusion as to what its purpose was.
Spitfire Vb AB910 is back
and finally…..there is an unidentified spitfire being rebuilt by one of the mechanics as a personnel project. The guide told me that everyone beleived it would be a static restoration apart from the guy who is restoring it. I was told it wasn’t one of the two exhibition flight spitfires of which i could see in the hanger.
best regards, steve

TE184’s Permit expired on 30th May 2002. There was a story that it had been sold but that seems to have come to nothing. Some years ago I carried out a reasonable amount of work on this machine whilst at Earls Colne. More avionics than a 747. TE184 never really did a great deal following the unfortunate death of Norman Lees and could now do with a lot of love and attention.
Personally i prefered the original blue scheme.

I would imagine that given the last of the requests, the first two would come naturally.
There isn’t really a ‘normal, boring’ French scheme for a Spitfire!!
It is certainly different, and represents an important part of the Spitfires history. Nice one Mark12 🙂 🙂

Willow,
I did the drawings and the research for the French scheme. The brief from Alain de Cadenet was something interesting, different and French.

Willow,
Double take!
Have another look at the photo!
Yes TE184 was originally a low back XVI converted by Trent Aero in 1989.
See it now or is it just my sense of humour?

Looks pretty standard for a IX / XVI to me. It looks similar to those on MH434 these days.
Wasn’t TE184 built as a low-back Spit, and converted to a high-back by Nick Grace?
It’s a rather expensive toy to leave sitting unused for 18months. Such a shame.

Double take.
That is a rather large cannon on TE184! A French A/F mod.?

Nearly right. It is collecting dust in the corner of a hangar at Halton. Don’t think the engine has turned in 18 months or so.

Thanks for that, I’d completely forgotten about the French scheme.
Is it possible that with a name like De Cadenet, the owner has a french connection? That would explain the colour scheme.

the aircraft is owned by Alain de Cadenet and is operated from North Weald. I think Alain was a presenter on that BBC2 airplane series?
this is the scheme that it is in at the moe,not as nice tho… Its better being in British or American colours than French!!!

What a shame it was only temporary. This was really different.
What scheme is it in now?
Actually, where is it now? It seems to have vanished.

how about this pic? i think they should of kept the aircraft in this scheme, its different. If anyone is thinking of complaining that a spitfire is in USAAF colours just renember that the TFC corsair and Wildcat are both in RNAF colours!

Sorry – the image quality is rubbish – I’ll rescan and repost at the next opportunity.

I think this was the Spit I saw flying over the Great Central Railway on the 15th of June. There was a blue photo recce spit flying over on the 14th. They were flying as part of a historical re-enactment weekend! Great to watch!! A German re-enactor was yelling random german at the spitfire before letting off a burst of MP-40 at it!

More to do with the number of posts I guess.
Last desert Spit before AB910 was TE184 in the temporary USAAF ‘Fargo Express’ scheme from a couple or so years ago I recall.

I seem to have the same problem.
Is it related to the number of replies?
If it is, then this posting will help me become a little less junior.
