VASS Laarbruch

OK I know this is flypast, but this stuffs 10 years old and the Phantom is almost a thing of the Past! Every operational RAF station has a Visiting Aircraft Servicing Section (VASS). If you’re into aeroplanes it’s probably the best place in the world to work, loads of different types of aircraft to look after and loads of photo opportunities. Back at the end of the 80’s and early 90’s I had VASS at Laarbruch, and JASE, another user of this forum was on my team. (He did the work, I took the photos’). So heres’s the begining of a series of posts from me featuring VASS Laarbruch. Hope you like! The first pics are of XV421 of 19 Sqn Wildenrath departing Laarbruch in 1989. Jase can be seen behind the wing carrying out see off checks.

RE: VASS Laarbruch

Combining Laarbruch sentiments with Wildenrath nostalgia… Keithmac, you make me feel like an old man with my best years long gone…

Yet somehow i don’t mind at all. Great stuff!

RE: VASS Laarbruch

Oh, thank you. The RAF Phantom with it’s BIG intakes was, for me, the best looking jet ever.

I had the privilege of working at RAF Stanley – one of my tasks as an airfield bod was to fill holes in the PSP made by the arrestor hooks – which meant we had to wait in the landrover by the RHAG until they had landed and taxied away. To be so close to an arriving Phantom was just, as the Americans say, ‘awesome’!

Keep ’em coming, Keith
