Operation Freshman

The 60th Anniversary Ceremony of “Operation Freshman” took place today, Wednesday 20 November 2002, at Skitten, Near Wick, Caithness –
“Operation Freshman” was the original Special Operations Executives (SOE) attempt to put out of action the Heavy Water Plant at Vermark, Norway, which was vital to the development of an Atomic Bomb by the Nazi’s. Were it not for the supreme sacrifice of those who gave their lives to this operation, the outcome of World War 11 may have been very different.
This and subsequent S.O.E. operations were the basis of the film “Heroes of Telemark”

RE: Operation Freshman

Brave men…….

As a footnote:-
There was hope a while back, that a group of us from the WW2 Living History Association were going to travel to Norway this week to commemorate this anniversary, by marching in correct period kit, from the desingnated glider landing zone to the heavy water plant. Alas, this proved to be too a ambitious of a idea, even though there was some interest from the Norweigians and talk of sponsership.

RE: Operation Freshman

Agreed.

This really was one op that could have / maybe did ‘change the course of the war’

Thanks for marking that for us.
