A photographic question

This afternoon I went to the photoshop to buy a filmscanner, but instead I returned home with a Canon EF100-400L -Is zoom lens, which I could obtain second hand for less than half the price. Is anyone uing this same lenstype, and if so, how are the results?

RE: A photographic question

I haven’t noticed any purple fringing but the D60 seems to have trouble with high contrast. White text on a dark background appears to ‘bleed’ into the dark colour (typical WW2 US Navy markings). It looks odd on the screen but when printed 4″x6″ it looks Ok.

Note: The D60 has a built in (due to its design) multiplier of 1.6 so the 100-400 becomes a 160-640 when used with the D60! Photos were taken at a shutter speed of 1/350 second.

RE: A photographic question

I have been using the 100-400 mm IS for over a year and a half. It is fantastic (but heavy)! I am using it on Elan 7 (film) and D60 (digital) cameras. It seems to focus faster on the Elan 7.

For some examples of the 100-400 mm IS with the D60 go to
http://ronsarchive.home.attbi.com/
and select CAF Airsho 02. My photos are with the 100-400 IS and Doug’s are using a 75-300 mm IS with a D60.

RE: Whirlwind Question !

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 24-10-02 AT 10:38 PM (GMT)]Hi David,

I remember a Whirlwind standing in a field with some other aircraft (mostly junk)just outside the boundery fence of Schonefeld airport. When I was there in May this year, all aircraft were gone, and the field was cleared of everything. Don’t know where it is now. They also had a manacing Yak 28 there, one of the Eastern types still hardly seen in the west. Hope the aircraft weren’t scrapped. I’ll check it out.

RE: Whirlwind Question !

Roger – In your travels around Europe have you seen Whirlwind Series.3 G-AYNP which was last in a museum at Berlin. I seem to remember that is now a gate guard for a German magazine . Any ideas ?

RE: RE%3A A photographic question

Ooops, you have blown my cover!!!! I wasn’t at Manching because I had “to work” ( “unfortunatly” I had to shoot the Connie while enroute to Holland), but otherwise I should have come to Manching because of the FW. Somebody mailed me the photo, orign unknown. Heard there was a historic airshow planned in South Germany around 18th May, hope it will be seen there although I don’t know where the show (100 years aviation in Germany) is yet. Isn’t there a N2501 at Manching?

RE: RE%3A A photographic question

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 24-10-02 AT 04:39 PM (GMT)]Yes, I did but due to the enormous crowd I couldn´t get anywhere near it to photograph during its first public engine run and I had left by the time it did its second run. Were you also there; have noticed that you posted a picture of the second engine run? The photos I did take do not show much more than this one does.

Just noticed that you are Roger S as in Roger Soupart, so judging from what I have seen in many years of aviation magazine reading you will probably not need much advice as far as aircraft photography is concerned…. 😉

RE: A photographic question

I bought one of those about 4 months ago and use it with a Canon EOS-3. I am v-e-r-y pleased with it, although it is a bit heavy. Pictures are very crisp and the autofocus is very quick. The image stabilizer is great, although it gets confused if you move the camera too quickly in the panning mode (e.g. when photographing a fast jet). I don’t think you will regret buying it…

See this link for a picture I took with it:

Quite a few contributors to airliners.net use it too.

Greetings

RE: A photographic question

Thanks,

The lens was offered to me for 1000 Euro, something like 620 p.Sterling, which I think was good value as new,a price as high as 2200 Euro, is asked for it. I have a boring job at day, so to compensate this I work for several mags and a Spanish press group as photographer during weekends and holidays, so I am used to expensive gear. As I made more than I could imagine with the N749NL story, I thought this was an offer to good te resist, especially as I damaged my left arm badly some time ago ( and thanks to the glorious health care in Holland I’ll have to wait five months for an operation) I thought the image stabaliser would be a help for me as I can hardly handle my normal gear at the moment. Maybe after my arm is “working” again, I’ll sell it off, let me know if anybody is interested.

RE: A photographic question

Umm, actually, thats a superb lens. Its L-series, which is fluorite, it is a pro lens, weighs a bit, and is image stabilised. The image quality is incredibly good, and it should retail at over a grand. Not at all plasticky. I am jealous as I want one. Do you normally shell out vast sums of money on a whim? And are you doing anything at the weekend?! Basically, a VERY good bit of glass, but only you know if it’s value to you can justify the cost. And you still need a scanner.

RE: A photographic question

Roj: Mate I looked for it in my Canon Lens Work II book produced by the Canon company for most of their equipment and I can’t find that lens for info for you. The only conclusion I can come to is that it’s one of the new ones developed for use with the lastest series of EOS cameras, personally I don’t care too much for them cause they are mainly plastic and damage really easily. Anyway, for any info you might need on any equipment, you might try looking on the canon website, they do have people interacting with the company in feed backs and you might find something there

www.canon.com (I think that’s the site, it’s actually broken up from their for regional and country uses, e.g. Canopn.com.au for Australia)
