[updated:LAST EDITED ON 18-10-02 AT 05:04 PM (GMT)]Ever wondered how we ended up with the phonetic alphabet in use today ?…where did it start from ?….and by who ?….
Did some digging around and have come up with the following, thought you might find this interesting as it covers a large period of history.
As usual, any mistakes or missing stuff, please let me know

RE: Phonetic alphabet.
Do the U.S. police still use Able, Baker, Charlie Dog etc, or did C.H.I.P.S. get it wrong! :+

RE: Phonetic alphabet.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 18-10-02 AT 05:29 PM (GMT)]lets try a different approach this time !
It all started with the British Army Signalling Regs 1904:
A = ACK, B = BEER, M = EMMA, P =PIP, S = ESSES, T = TOC, V = VIC (ALL OTHER LETTERS WHERE THE SAME AS THE ALPHABET IE:- B,D,E, ETC ETC
Then along came British Army Signalling Manual 1914 :
A = ACK, B = BEER, D = DON, M = EMMA, P = PIP, S = ESSES, T = TOC, V = VIC (ALL OTHER LETTERS WHERE THE SAME AS THE ALPHABET IE:- C,E,F ETC
Then we have British Army Signalling Manual 1927 :
A = ACK, B= BEER, C= CHARLIE, D = DON, E = EDWARD, H = HARRY, I = INK, J = JOHHNY, M = MONKEY, P = PIP, Q = QUEEN, S = SUGAR, T = TOC, V = VIC (ALL OTHER LETTERS WHERE THE SAME AS THE ALPHABET IE: F,G,K ETC
Then the British Army Signalling Manual for 1938 came out :
A = ACK, B = BEER, C = CHARLIE, D = DON, E = EDWARD, F = FREDDIE, G = GEORGE, H = HARRY, I = INK, J = JOHHNIE (NOTE DIFFERENT SPELLING), K = KING, L = LONDON, M = MONKEY, N = NUTS, O = ORANGE, P = PIP, Q = QUEEN, R = ROBERT, S = SUGAR, T = TOC, U = UNCLE, V – VIC, W = WILLIAM, X = X-RAY, Y = YORKER, Z = ZEBRA.
Allied Forces of WW2 then came up with the following :
A = ABLE, B = BAKER, C = CHARLIE, D = DOG, E = EASY, F = FOX, G = GEORGE, H = HOW, I = ITEM, J = JIG, K = KING, L = LOVE, M = MIKE, N = NAN, O = OBOE, P = PETER, Q = QUEEN, R = ROGER, S = SUGAR, T = TARE, U = UNCLE, V – VICTOR, W = WHISKEY, X =X-RAY, Y = YOKE, Z = ZEBRA.
and we finish off with the NATO 1959 :
A = ALFA, B = BRAVO, C = CHARLIE, D = DELTA, E = ECHO, F = FOXTROT, G = GOLF, H = HOTEL, i = INDIA, K = KILO, L = LIMA, M = MIKE, N = NOVEMBER, O = OSCAR, P = PAPA, Q = QUEBEC, R = ROMEO, S = SIERRA, T = TANGO, U = UNIFORM, V – VICTOR, W = WHISKEY, X = X-RAY, Y =YANKEE, Z = ZULU
Hopefully this time it’ll be easier to read.
cheers
Gary

RE: Phonetic alphabet.
The new ´NATO´ alphabet comes from the offices of the ASCC (Air Standards Coordinating Comittee), the same people who thought of the MiG-15 as a Fagot.
