Heres a bit of a poser !
Looks like an Invader with a clipped wing (or were both wings clipped ?) being used for trials with a ‘Vortex Ring’ braking parachute.
What, where, when ? (i think I know why) and by whom ?
Apologies for the quality of the scan.
Cheers
Gary

Umm, I cant quite see a situation where you would need a braking chute anywhere other than on the ground!!!!.
what about re-entry?

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 27-09-02 AT 03:05 PM (GMT)]Thanks for the info guys.
The Magazine I scanned this from did not mention anything about the picture, less the type of ‘chute’ in use. In the original photo, in the vegetation behind the Invader are measurement markings.
wonder what it felt like to a standard bomber jock to get upto speed then drop the ‘chute’.
Cheers for the info Lai and welcome to the Forum.
Cheers

RE: Clipped Wing Invader ?
The A-26B pictured is s/n 44-34137 which was used in the forties to conduct parachute braking tests. The outer wings, landing gear doors and other equipment was removed to lighten the aircraft so it could reach speeds simulating an aircraft that had just landed. After the trials ended in 1948, this Invader was scrapped. Several types of parachutes were tested, not only the type shown on the photo. I think the Air Force itself conducted these tests.

RE: Clipped Wing Invader ?
Very good Philo!
I meant that you wouldn’t want it’s first deployment to be on an aircraft which is landing, you’d want to try it out first.

RE: Clipped Wing Invader ?
It’s an interesting picture all right. As the aircraft looks fairly close to the vegetation behind it could it be that the aircraft is not on an airfield at all but some kind of test track? For the initial trials of a braking parachute you would want to test it on the ground first anyway I suspect. Chop the wings off a time expired airframe and I would imagine you have a relatively inexpensive machine which does not require an operational airfield with which to conduct your original tests.
Just a thought.

Must have been taxi trials?
