RE: anyone here like Mosquitos?

On the subject of flightsims.
Have any of you tried IL2 Sturmovik www.il2sturmovik.com
Simply THE best WW2 sim out at the moment, and with the imminent release of IL2, Forgotton Battles probably THE best this year!

There are 90+ aircraft to fly in IL2, too many to mention here however how about;

Tempest, 109 (most variants), Fw190, Il2, I16, B1, Ju87, Hurricane, P47, Yak’s, Mig’s, P2, He111, etc, etc.

Just go on over to the website and check it out.

They are also proposing (although not certain) a Mediteranean Theatre.
Beaufighters and Mossies attacking Flackships in the Med, ahhh, bliss!

I’m sad too – but a cheapskate to boot: www.simviation.com

The Typhoon for CFS and Typhoon for CFS2 being my favourites (I wonder why?). Plenty of campaigns and missions, as well as aircraft – all free to download – as well as other add-ons. And CFS3 comes out fairly soon – but still too long to wait.

RE: anyone here like Mosquitos?

BBMF’s aircraft are predominantly either stressed skin or metal framed construction, and their engineering operations are geared for this. I’ve learned in the last couple of years that maintaining wood in airframes is completely different to the skills, methods and procedures needed for metal. As dedicated as the BBMF are, they neither have the infrastructure or expertise to maintain a wooden aircraft in flying condition. BAe had a tough enough job keeping RR299 up, and she was their sole historic airframe.

RE: anyone here like Mosquitos?

Surely maintaining it wouldnt have been any harder than maintaining 5 Spits 2 hurricanes and a Dak?

More like the MOD crushed the idea.

RE: anyone here like Mosquitos?

The Mosquito that went to Little Rissington was TA639, which CFS continued to fly on the air show circuit for a couple of years before the powers-that-be frowned on it. It is now at Cosford and is probably in the best condition of any Mossie in the country.

At one time, many years ago now, BBMF considered taking TA639 on and adding it to the fleet, but the main reason that idea failed was the lack of suitable expertise in maintaining a wooden aeroplane.

RE: anyone here like Mosquitos?

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 20-09-02 AT 07:35 AM (GMT)]Hi Ant & all,

You’re quite right about the Liverpool Mosquito. It’s a Mosquito B35, TA 634, now on display at the Mosquito Museum, London Colney. Despite all the adverse weather conditions she’s had to put up with, in her past (before they built the Goldsmith Hanger), the airframe is in pretty good condition.

As for the Mosquito as an aeroplane It was quite simply – THE BEST!!!!!!!! Another saying for the Mossie, from the War, “she’s all things, to all Men” because of it’s versatility.

Cheers,
Neilly

RE: anyone here like Mosquitos?

Hi folks,
I think the Mossie at Speke is the B.35 now at the Mosquito Museum at Salisbury Hall in Hertfordshire, although I’m not 100% on this.I know it also spent some time outdoors at Little Rissington,so perhaps I’m getting confused.I expect Nielly, our resident Mossie guru, will know more than I do.
That sequence of pictures certainly are of a Ventura.Unfortunately, they were not operated to thier full potential by the RAF.Firstly, they had a Boulton Paul mid-upper turret fitted instead of the Martin turret. The BP turret only had a pair of .303’s as opposed to the Martin’s 0.50’s,and was also far more bulbous, taking some 20mph off the top speed. To add insult to injury, the type was operated in a similar fashion to something like a Mitchell, being sent out at medium altitudes in sizeable formations. Hedge-hopping down on the deck was the Ventura’s forte,US versions being able to fly at well over 300mph given the chance. These low level tactics proved very successfull out over the Pacific, although ofcourse losses were often heavy because of the dangerous nature of low level missions. However, there are numerous reports of PV-1’s taking on the Jap fighters sent to intercept them, and coming away with a favourable outcome.
Just to add one or two recognition tips, the later PV2 Harpoon had short, squat tailfins of almost rectangular shape, and the wings were also longer, but I’ve often found it tricky to tell the difference.

I’d guess the fuselage and other bits are all stored northside. Wouldn’t surprise me, Mr Grey seems to be running out of space for his toys… 😉

RE: anyone here like Mosquitos?

Those look like Venturas to me.

As for the Mossie, I love Spitfires, but Mossie’s come a close second. I didn’t know about the CFS2 Mosquito add on. One more reason to buy a new computer powerful enough to run CFS2!!

Thanks for the picture posts up above. I search high and low on the net for Mosquito pictures but have never come across those ones. Always nice to see fresh material.

RE: anyone here like Mosquitos?

Not very good at this.

Is that a Hudson or a Ventura?

The Venturas flew from my local aerodrome, Feltwell. I always thought that the poor sods who had to fly them really got a rough deal. Give me a Mossie any time.

I love the Mossie. It broke my heart when the last flying survivor went in at Woodford, not just for the poor sods on board either. I would dearly love to see another in the air. I just keep buying those lottery tickets.

One of the survivors used to be a gate guardian at Liverpool (Speke – now John Lennon) Airport when I was an ATC Corporal. I always wanted to get it indoors, there seemed no sense to me leaving a wooden aircraft out in the rain. It used to look so imposing, glistening in the street lights.

On the same topic I recently bought Mosquito Squadron for Combat Flight Simulator 2 (OK I’m sad)

Whilst it doesn’t live up to its claim to realistaically portray Methwold Airfield and village, the sound of the two Merlins powering up to max boost is spine-tinglingly good.
