Two Comet questions

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 29-08-02 AT 07:28 AM (GMT)]First, can I make it clear we are talking about the twin piston-engine racer. G-ACSS (Grosvenor House) and it’s ilk, not the one that belongs on the airliner forum 😉

How many of you (UK-based bods) have never actually seen it fly?

I find this strange because in my memory it was a feature at Old Warden until quite regularly, but maybe my memory is playing tricks.

Secondly. Wasn’t there another one being rebuilt at Gloucester Staverton? What happened to that?

Moggy

I was lucky enough to see it’s post-rebuild landing at Mildenhall in 1986 on the anniversary of the London Sydney race. Fabulous aircraft.

Doughnut – The machine at Kings Langley is now at the Mosquito Aircraft Museum under restoration. The former Portugese machine CS-AAJ is underway at Derby back to her original markings at G-ACSP (Black Magic) although the won’t be an awful lot of her original structure in her.

RE: Two Comet questions

Various static replica’s have been made over the years. One currently hangs in a shopping mall at Hatfield, it is visable from the north-bound A1 just as you enter the Hatfield tunnel. I remember seeing one at the Kings Lanley fishing lakes many years ago, but I think it has gone now. The Mosquito Museum has a replic, but I’ve never seen it. Parts of the original ‘Black Magic’, which were recovered from Spain, are supposed to be under restoration somewhere in UK.

RE: Two Comet questions

I have seen it fly many times at various locations, of course this was when it was able to operate from Hatfield. It has not been able to operate from its current home at Old Warden until the runway was recently extended, although it has been fast taxied in recent years, in fact until the end of last years display season. The plan was to get it airworthy again for the begining of this season, but of course it has been blighted by weather conditions, availabilty of pilot(George Ellis currently will only allow himself to fly it) and techical problems.
It is not listed to display this Sunday at the pageant and even if the problem was fixed today i doubt whether time would permit any display.
I think the best hope is that the correct time is taken to fully sort all of the issues out, get some airtime on her during the Autumn/spring with a view to a full display season next year.
As regards to other examples, these is at least one replica as i remember it and that was build and flown in the US.
