My Favourite Aircraft

Yes, it’s the good ol’Chippy! It’s the first aircraft I ever flew in, the first aircraft I ever flew, the first aircraft I nearly crashed and an aircraft I had 2 tours of duty maintaining! This aircraft WG348 was on the Primary Flying Squadron of 2 FTS Church Fenton in the early 70’s, and was one of four which we marked up with the Station Badge to be used by the “Blue Chips” aerobatic team. It is still airworthy as far as I know as G-BBMV. Make an old man happy and post your Chippy Pics!!!

RE: My Favourite Aircraft

Nice Phil, although why someone should want to replace the beautiful 373 Cu In (that’s 6.124 Ltr, to you modern metric types) Gipsy, with a Cessna puddlejumper engine, I just can’t think. Are we back to the Centaurus/Twin Wasp Sea Fury discussion again ?

RE: My Favourite Aircraft

Thanks boys’s keep ’em coming. AOZP is a real cracker of a paint scheme. My first flight was out of Kinloss, over Findhorn Bay on a glorious Sunday afternoon. 20 Minutes of aero’s that I’ll never forget. I flew again regularly with the Kenya Air Force a few years later, then in the 70’s when I was at Church Fenton. I’ve attached WP924 when it was with the CFS at Little Rissington, it’s now G-BBMX and owned by a Dutchman.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 29-08-02 AT 01:30 PM (GMT)]Steve,
maybe You don´t have to go anywhere, not far at least.
I checked the swedish register and this came up:

Registration, SE-BON
Serial number, WB569
Registered, 21-04-97
C of A expired, 30-04-98
Registration cancelled, 08-10-99, sold to England

Is it going back to Sweden once again?

Christer 🙂

Keith, it’s an absolute pleasure to do this!

This particular Chippie is WB569, which took me aloft for my first flight back in August 1982, pretty much 20 years ago to the day. She was flying with the AEF out of Manston, I was there as a 13 year old ATC cadet, and it was love at first flight.

We barrel-rolled, we looped, and we stooged over Kent and the White Cliffs at 2000 feet, and that was it – I was hooked.

Sadly, we weren’t faithful to each other – she flew countless other cadets after that, and I spent the next nineteen years logging time in various other Chipmunks, Cessna 150’s and 152, Piper Cherokees and even a Jaguar T2, but I never forgot that first time. Well you don’t, do you?

And then, last year at Duxford, there she was again in all her glory. She’s changed her name now – David Burke tells me she’s now SE-BON, and presumably she’ll be heading off for a new life in Sweden, if she’s not already gone. Some say that in life you should never go back, and usually I’d agree. But maybe, just maybe, I’d be willing to break that rule for another fling with ‘569… 😉

RE: My Favourite Aircraft

I would have to rate the Chipmunk in my top 10, the first aircraft I ever took the controls of. The VC10 CMK1 (See the world backwards with the RAF), Fat Albert hanging out the back over Wiltshire as a ATC Cadet in the late 70’s and also playing with the flight sim at Lyneham. Westland Whirlwind Mk1, just to see one in the flesh would be enough. Like most people the Spitfire means a lot, noise grace it’s something special, especially BM597 top of my top 10.

Then there’s the Hurricane, Hawker Nimrod 1, Fury Mk1 and Sea, Mosquito, P51, Dewoitine, ME109g, P47, P38, Firefly, Invader,

Oh Santa can I have a bigger bag please !!!!

RE: My Favourite Aircraft

Hi Keith. None of the old turbo prop a/c are really my favourite. My fav is the Lockheed tristar… I know its not related with this forum, But its my fav because it was the first a/c I ever flew in.

Sorry thats its not related. But if I had to choose a turbo prop/military a/c it would have to be the Spitfire, classic fighter, good shape, and simply pleases me more than anything else at airshows.
