What was your favourite airshow and why?

Just wanted to see what people rate as their best airshow.

For me some of the early Fighter Meet shows at North Weald especially the ground attack sequences (1989-1995) were the best for warbirds with great views in the static park and an entertaining and varied display.

For heavy metal I rate one of the early Fairfords, it was the one where they had 7 or 8 different aerobatic teams displaying (spain, france, italy, uk, moracco, etc) and the weather was a scorcer!

Whatever happened the the RN Sharks (or the Alouettes, French)

I will probably get scorched myself for this one however although Duxford has the quantity of aircraft the display itself seems to be the same every year? I still go but I miss North Weald and Great Warbirds.

I guess at the moment some of the other shows like Kemble and Biggin still hold more interest for me (and the other alf).

Ted.

I think my favorite was Coventry 1950’s airshow 3 years ago. It was a really nice laid back airshow, with a lovely flypast of DC3 DC4 and DC6. Wonderful sight and sound. A great display by the Twin Pioneer aswell.
All the Legends shows aswell!

The Mildenhall Show, was it 97, with the pair of P51s flying tight with F15s, was simply wondererful, and Biggin Hills 2000 Autumn show was great simply for its casual old fashioned charm, and stunning finale (18 Spits and 2 Hurricanes) and the very moving last post.

The Fifty Years of Military Flying show at Upavon in 1962. Wonderful weather and the crowd on the side of the aifield that almost looks down onto it. Display included the first public appearnace of the P.1127, various vintage machines including the Fairey Fulmar, and a combined ops demo with Beverleys, Hunters, Belvederes and the like. Couple that with formation and solo flypasts by such gems as Scimitars, Lincoln, Mossie, Comet C.4 flanked by two C.2s, etc, etc, and a stunning 74 SquadronLightning formation display, with one solo pass firectly over the heads of the crowd and so low that programmes, hats, etc took-off in the jet blast!

I used to enjoy Finningley, it was my “local” show and was like a family day out, we all used to meet up there. I remember watching the Red Arrows, a Lancaster, Lightenings and Concorde once paid a visit. I don’t remember much detail, only from looking at photos, but I used to love going.

My favourite shows are Flying Legends, because I`m a warbird fan. I think Legends is the best because the action is non stop and the finale massed flypasts.

My second favourite show was Duxfords Battle of Britain show in September 2000 for the simple reason of the sight and sound of 20 Spitfires and 3 Hurricanes in the air together.

RE: What was your favourite airshow and why?

All Air Shows are good for me,but favourites must be the shows at Strathallan nr Auchterarder in Scotland maybe because I was involved in the running and also the suberb background of the surrounding countryside. We used to have a great selection of aircraft for a small local show.Pity it all had to come to an end.
Also remember with nostalgia a show at Conpton Abbot.
Always went to the show at Leuchars but it is beginning to be very much the same every year, perhaps because there is not the same number of different types in the R.A.F. now

RE: What was your favourite airshow and why?

Two favourites stand out for me.

1 – Battle of Britain 60th anniversary airshow at Duxford, September 2000. Why? 19 Spitfires and 4 Hurricanes, arriving overhead from the north side. Wonderful, truly wonderful. 🙂

2 – Children in Need Airshow at Gransden, every September (Sunday 1st September this year, make a date!!). The little grass airfield I fly from, and over the last few years I’ve seen it populated with Yaks, Spitfires, Mustangs, and all sorts of other gems. The flour-bombing Turbulents, Mark Jefferies’ demonstrations of why he has been British aerobatic champion, and the added bonus of knowing that the proceeds go to charity. But the clincher for me, every year, is the minutes silence in memory of the Lancaster crews who flew from nearby Gransden Lodge. And for the last three years, that poignant moment has been followed by a faultless display by PA474. Gets me every time, that does… 🙂

RE: What was your favourite airshow and why?

Quite a few come to mind… The Fairoaks air shows of my childhood with my late dad; they were always opened at 2.00 pm by the great Neil Williams in the Cosmic Wind; his timing was uncanny (until you looked behind you and saw him stooging around in the distance!) They had the Tiger Club in Turbulents and those (sometimes) four single seat Tiger Moths – Deacon,Bishop, etc; — tape cutting, flour bombing!air races inside the field boundary; brilliant!
Duxford when the Lightening crashed – terrible sight; like motor racing fans, you don’t go to shows to see these things; so sad.
Duxford again; the Breitling Fighters ending the Autumn show ’99, with their ‘glued together’ formation tribute to Mark, so soon after his death; the crowd was so quiet; very emotional time.
Most shows are fun, but the samy-ness is perhaps due to increasing safety regs for everyones security; no overflight of the crowd, etc.

RE: What was your favourite airshow and why?

i too recall the warbirds displays at west malling, the last one i can think of there was a flypast that included the sunderland flying boat that was at chatham dockyard at the time, i can also think of the vulcan that if i recall, burnt a hole in the runway on take off, and sally b not long after she was in mamphis belle, fireing her gunn’s on a flypast…..i also remember me and my mate not having enough money to pay two entrance fee’s and one of us hideing in the boot of a car and halfing the fee. ( the things you do to see aircraft! )i feel deeply ashamed now!!!! maybe if we had paid full price west malling wouldent look like this….

RE: What was your favourite airshow and why?

I missed all Great warbird events (a little young). I do agree that duxford can be a little samey. I do however remember my first Flying legends ( I think it was 95) The last time I say such aircraft as the Lockheed lightning, and mosquito. Also the only time I’ve seen the firefly to date. They seem to go for more of the same typr these days instead of variety. Another great airshow was seawings 2000 at southampton so rare to see flying boats display in their element. Pity the russians and canadair couldn’t make it!

I guess mine would have to be the 8th Great warbirds air display in 89 when flying in from the distance came a shape and sight i had never seen before and probaly will never again! but its display was fantastic and one that i will always remember! Ok what was it? it was of course the Sunderland flying boat such a big plane yet so nimble ahh still think of it now. Oh well dig out the video and watch again Heaven!

RE: What was your favourite airshow and why?

Many spring to mind.

My very first airshow was Old Warden in the early 70’s. Most memorable things were the smell from the WWI aircraft and the Vintage Pair arriving unannounced over the treetops. A sight which my Dad, who’s now 75, still remembers vividly.

Other shows also have exciting or interesting memories, arriving early at Cosford to see the airfield being ‘beaten up’ by a pair of RAF F-4’s, the tragedy of a USAF F-4 crash at Brawdy, the meeting with a B-17 gunner which I’ve mentioned before, and again, being too young to realise the importance of the opportunity, meeting Sir Douglas Bader in company with a German chap I now know to be Adolf Galland. Highlights of many such events now hold pride of place in my treasure trove of memories to be edited into my own personal ultimate airshow.

As for one particular show, I think it would have to be any of the Great Warbirds shows at West Malling.

RE: What was your favourite airshow and why?

The last Great Warbirds, held at Wroughton, was a cracker-Sally and the Lanc together, last time I saw the Vulcan, lovely sunny day. I too find Duxford a bit too samey most of the time.

I miss the old RAF St Athan at Home day, it was right on my doorstep and the early birds in the 80’s could go inside their Vulcan, or see the Me410 and FW190 being run up!

Never liked the IAT much-too big and too modern for me. Vividly remember the Migs colliding in ’93 though!
