P-51D

Just read that The Fighter Collection has purchased a new P-51D Mustang. `Yellow Kilo` from Sweden.

RE: P-51D

If you have a warbird and you need revenue from airdisplays to fly it you cannot really afford it ! The air display circuit isn’t a massive money earner and many of the acts are duplicated keeping prices down.
Operation’s like TFC don’t rely on airshow revenue solely.

RE: P-51D

My remarks re the grocery chain paint scheme was intended to be
somewhat tongue-in-cheek and I fully appreciate how operators benefit
from this. But pretty it ain’t…

RE: P-51D

Yeah but airshow organisers are more likely to book Nooky book 4 or Big Beautiuful Doll than somthing with adverts all over it?

RE: P-51D

Kenneth – it’s worth noting that painting the Mustang to advertise a
grocery chain probably paid for her to fly for a year. Various warbirds have benefitted from a sponsor to keep them in the air (Sally B -FlyPast !) so I am all in favour of it !

RE: P-51D

I bet it wasnt the owners choice to put it in such a hideous scheme. With the other P51s around I bet they got the priority booking.

Has this one been to Duxford before?

I agree: 1 a/c = 1 set of markings.

At the bottom of my list is the grocery chain livery….

RE: P-51D

It´s true that the aircraft at some point in time was denied its authentic swedish markings and had to fly with distorted crowns in the roundels. The crowns looked like flower pots.
At another point in time it even flew void of swedish markings all togeteher, and was painted in a scheme to highlight the sponsor, a nation wide grocery store. Their logotype was positioned in place of the roundels.
What´s funny is that the swedish national insignia isn´t protected by copyright, at least wasn´t at that time, so they didn´t have to ask permission in the first place ……

As a swede I´d appreciate if the aircraft remained in its swedish markings but, it´s the owners choice.

I´ve seen a picture of an ex Swedish Air Force P-51D in the U.S. with one side painted in its USAAF colors and the other in its SAF colors.
What´s Your opinion on that possibility?
My opinion is; one aircraft – one paint job, even if it means no more Mustang in swedish colors.

Christer

RE: P-51D

While a return to the USAAF colour scheme is historically
correct, the Swedish colour scheme is equally historically
correct! In view of the amount P-51’s in USAAF markings
would it not be a refreshing variation to leave the aircraft
in its present colour scheme? I always liked the Swedish
post WW2 markings, and tend to think that this one looks
rather nice…! But: I’m not the owner, and his choice must
be respected.

In reply to an earlier posting, I believe that the previous
operators indeed had to remove the three yellow crowns in the
roundels; at least they were missing from the wing roundels
when I saw it in Denmark in the late eighties.

RE: P-51D

Ashley: think you have sorted the mystery. I guess they know the P51c will be grounded for ages so they have got this one to stand in till its ready – a guess anyway.

RE: P-51D

I personally hope to see her returned to her 78th FG lineage. The historical significance almost needs no question. Although I do not have a link to the specific page, Mr. Grey gave extensive comments regarding this particular P-51 on the Warbirdsresourcegroup.com info exchange. He has a particular fondness for this a/c and it is great that he can make it part of his collection. It would be a great sight to see ex combat vets Miss Helen and Twilight Time roaming England after all these years. Great stuff!

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 09-04-02 AT 11:27 AM (GMT)]Thanks for the link Moggy 🙂

Sadsack…last time I saw here she was making progress but there’s still a way to go by the look of things…

Likewise, I’m surprised at TFC buying another P-51 when they’ve already got Princess Elizabeth…I thought Stephen Grey was trying to fill gaps in his collection, not replicate them? But that said, it will be lovely to see another P-51 in the skies over Duxford…

Welcome to Duxford ‘Yellow Kilo’…I look forward to meeting you 🙂

RE: P-51D

TFC’s new P-51D is the 1st picture with the yellow nose.
The 2nd picture is a scheme worn by the Scandinavian Historic Flight’s P-51D although for only 1 season if memory serves me right.
It’s a shame as this was a nice very different scheme to see.
Heres hoping for the return of the MOOSE.

RE: P-51D

Is it one of these two or are they one and the same machine in defferent schemes, sorry I’m not too up to speed with Swedish operated P51’s.

RE: P-51D

Is that the one some lunatic decided had to obscure the national markings a few years back?

Its good to hear the news, allthough i thought TFC sold moose as they only needed one Mustang? Perhpas they never thought PE would be grounded so long. Hows she getting on Ashley?

RE: P-51D

Its an ex-Duxford machine too in its USAF days, so in effect it’s coming home 🙂

Will they respray it into these markings I wonder?

RE: P-51D

Hi Raider…where did you read this? Does this mean TFC will have two Mustangs when Princess Elizabeth is up and running?
