Bit of news came through this lunchtime – Mildenhall Air Fete 2002 is CANCELLED.
Don’t know any more than that, but presumably (and rightly IMHO) due to security considerations.

RE: Mildenhall Cancelled
While the local council played it’s part, I think the final reason for the cancellation was having so many personnel posted away from RAF Mildenhall.
Hopefully, the Air Fete will be back – axis of evil/war on terrorism dependant of course. It’s a great PR event for USAFE and they enjoy organising it too.

RE: Mildenhall Cancelled
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 14-02-03 AT 03:15 PM (GMT)]I live about 8 miles away from the ‘hall, probably only 4 from Lakenheath
There is no serious objection in the area. Everybody is used to having the USAF around, they are delightful guys, scrupulously polite and cause no trouble. When the two f15s augered in last year there was genuine grief around here.
What you are seeing is the action of a couple of local councillors trying to get some column inches in the Bury Free Press.
But honestly chaps, I don’t think you really need to blame the councillors. I suggest the USAF were always going to pull the show, doing it now just makes them look like they are co-operating with local feeling.
As someone has remarked, in fact it will sadden a lot of local people.

Let’s hope it’s over quickly and all the ‘boys’ come back

RE: Mildenhall Cancelled
I cant believe residents would live near such a huge base and be stupid enough to object to noise. Besides I would guess traffic goes in and out all the time.

RE: Mildenhall Cancelled
Wasn’t it the last Mildenhall that the Lakenheath F15s did a fly-by in IMC?
Great for the sound recordist freaks, a real downer for the step-ladder regiment.

Because Lakenheath is really close to Mildenhall.

RE: Mildenhall Cancelled
OK, so why does the BBC report on Mildenhall show a pic of an F-15 from Lakenheath?

RE: Mildenhall Cancelled
I wouldn’t be at all surprised if we see some of the other military-hosted shows cancelled this year too. If (or should that be ‘when’?) Gulf War II kicks off, the services will be at far too high an alert state to allow Joe Public to start traipsing all over operational stations.
On another – somewhat cynical – note, I also wouldn’t be surprised if we’ve already seen the last ever Mildenhall Air Fete…
1999 – on
2000 – cancelled due to Kosovo ops
2001 – on, but recieved bad press due to traffic problems
2002 – cancelled due to Afghanistan ops
2003 – cancelled due to potential Iraq ops
2004 – cancelled due to runway re-surfacing
2005 – US DoD decides not to allocate funding for an airshow in Europe which was last held four years previously, and which even then drew widespread criticism…
