Mosquito manufacture

Hi,
can anyone out there tell me what kind of woods were used in the construction of the Mosquito?

The reason I am asking is that in a previous post, I waffled on about a deskset I had purchased including a photo of an air gunner and two 20mm shell casings. I have since been told that the base is made of ash. 20mm cannon, ash? Is there a link to Mosquitoes? BTW The previous post was ‘I know it’s a longshot but…’

Hope someone out there can help,

Regards,

RE: Mosquito manufacture

No, the leading edges were laminated in special presses. I have had a quick scan through the Mosquito construction manual, unfortunately I can’t find any reference to ash. I’ll keep a look out for you. I have a stack of Mosquito books, publications etc so I might turn something up.
I thought another piccie from my Mosquito files. LR 504 pictured at Bourne August 1944

Interesting Mosquito Fact:
Each Mosquito wing had 30,000 brass screws in it!

RE: Mosquito manufacture

Neilly,

Thanks for that. I’ve been led to understand that ash is a wood which can be bent into shape using heat and moisture. I would have thought it might be useful for things like leading and trailing edges. I suppose i’m clutching at straws really, to try and make sense of where it came from.

Thanks for your help, if you come up with anything else let me know.

RE: Mosquito manufacture

The meterials used in the construction of the Mosquito, were:
Canadian Birch Ply (various thicknesses)
Balsa wood
Douglas Fir
Spruce

I seem to recall Ash wood mentioned, in the constrution. I think it was used in places, such as were the undercart was mounted. I’ll do some checking & let you know.

Interesting Mosquito fact:
Each wing of the Mosquito could withstand a breaking strain of 41 Tons.
