Flying experience

It would be interesting to know which types members have flown in, whether like me its mostly through begging, being lucky or sometimes paying.I would imagine some folks have had military experience as well so there should be some interesting experiences there.
You should exclude ‘Easyjet 737 etc !!!
Here’s my short list to kick off with:-
Wessex (Lots of flights whilst serving TAVR)
C130 – again in TAVR
VC10 – Compliments of RAF BZN
Tristar – ” ” “
Tiger Moth –
Percival Prentice
Twin Pin
DC3
Miles Magister
Bulldog
Chipmunk
Cessena 152 & 172
Piper (Single engined 4 seater, cant remember type)
Cessena Citation (Almost fast jet performance)
Various Microlights
Twin Squirrel
Jet Ranger
I’m sure there are others, just cant remember at the moment.

RE: Flying experience

The memory needed a jogging and some of these posts reminded me of a few more that I’ve flown as PIC:
Mooney Executive, Rockwell 112TCA, Christen Husky, Fleet Canuck, Beechcraft 35, Beechcraft 23R, Sundowner, Stearman, Antanov AN2, Ercoupe, Taylorcraft, T28(dual), Navion

As Passenger/Crew:
C47, Canso SAR, North Star, Lancaster, C119G

Missed Out on a ride in Sea Fury (Cottonmouth II)previously owned by a good friend Jerry Janes of Vancouver. Also missed a ride in the RCAF Comet..gave up my seat to help a Cdn Army type get his injured daughter to hospital in timely order. Missing that flight was worth it.

RE: Flying experience

I am not a pilot but i love to be thrown around the sky as often as my missus and the money allows. Unfortunatly flying in the U.K is an over-expensive hobby. Myself and a few friends from work save every week then when there is enough we fly, none of that boring straight and level stuff but high G aerobatics. We’ve had a few let downs with pilots promising this and that but they’ve never come through.
The aircraft i have flown in are Extra 300, this gives the ultimate ride and is my most flown type, i have also flown in an L-29 Delphin unfortunatly lost at Eastbourne, then there is the Harvard, had 1 ride over here, very mediochre, then went to Florida and went up for an hour with Warbird Adventures, this is the best ride on offer, unless you can afford Stallion 51 which do the same as the Harvard crew but with Mustangs, which brings me to a ride i won with the Tiger Squadron at Duxford where i won a ride in the Breitling Fighter Mustang, ORGASMIC. I have also flown in a Christen Eagle and a Stearman, they were different, Yak-52 is o.k depending on who’s flying it.
Top of my wish list is the Hawker Hunter followed closely by the Gnat, but to fly in one of these in this country is a rip off, a Hunter costs about £800 for an hour, whys the cheapest ride £1500 then, in the U.S you could get a ride in a 2-seat Super Sabre or Starfighter for that.I would like a ride in an L-39 and Yak-11.
The list could go on but the bank account don’t allow it.

RE: Flying experience

Although on my last visit to Hendon the sadness of the wreck and what it represents really hit me, I do think a full, genuine Halifax restoration in the UK would be a good thing, and she’d make for great comparison with the Lanc, too.

RE: Flying experience

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 26-01-02 AT 09:23 PM (GMT)]Lancman,
Hendon’s Halibag is very sorry looking inside! She has had her entire innards pulled out & shoved in a store somewhere & the whole of her interior is finished with that horrible red waxoyl dye.
They won’t normally let anyone near her, but we got a special dispensation to get in as we are involved in the restoration of NA337. The floor is extremely fragile & it wouldn’t take much to pop right through into the bomb bay.

There are noises about restoring her though, although if that happens, it will have to be a total strip down & many parts will have to be replaced due to corrosion…. Ever hopeful though.

RE: Flying experience

Halibag, what’s it like inside the Hendon Halibag then? I’m surprised they let people inside it actually. I used to have quite a few looks inside Hendon aircraft, like the Sunderland before it went public (you miss so much now from the areas you can’t go in) and of course the Lancaster before they jacked her tail up onto that ridiculous little plinth thing. Spits, B17, Vulcan, Catalina, I’ve been inside a few but only flown (historic-wise that is) in a Tiger Moth and a Rapide.

RE: Flying experience

Keithmac, was the Wirlwind of 28Sqdn the Twin WWII type of the Helo Wirlwind?

If it was the former, could you talk more about it, and maybe some pics, I love this little beast and belive that with a bit of mods it could have been one of the best during the war!

May you find more mercy in Hell, cause you won’t get it from me!
