On the telly this week…

Here’s my usual listing of interesting telly programmes for this week…
Tuesday,Jan 22nd,Ch4,8pm-10pm:
Firstly at 8pm,’Battle Stations-Lancaster Bomber’.An hour long documentary about the Avro Lancaster, and Bomber Command in general, done in much the same way as last week’s programme on the Spitfire.
Should be worthwhile.
Then imediatelly following Battle Stations comes ‘Commando’ at 9pm.This week’s edition focuses on the daring raid on the dry docks and U-Boat repair facilities at St.Nazaire in 1942.Judging by last week’s programme,it should be well worth a gander.
Thursday,Jan 24th-
BBC2,8pm, ‘Ray Mears Extreme Survival’-Not a programme you’d immediately associate with Flypast subject matter, but a number of recent programmes have included the stories of airman who have crashed or been shot down in some of the most inhospitable places on earth, the first programme in this series being about American pilots shot down over North Vietnam, and last week’s second programme focusing on the rescue of a South African Air Force crew who had ditched thier Ventura on Namibia’s Skeleton Coast. So all things considered,it might be worth a look, and it’s a decent programme anyway. This week’s programme focuses on survival stories and techniques in Alaska.
BBC1,8pm ‘Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade’-Ok,ok,so it’s a trifle daft, but it’s worth watching if you want something with more of a fun element to it.The problem is that it is on at the same time as Ray Mears, and it also runs into the Ch5 movie…
Ch5,9pm ‘Gallipoli’-This is the highly acclaimed 1981 epic starring Mel Gibson as one of a pair of young Australians going off to fight in the ill-fated campaign at Gallipoli.Well recieved in it’s time,it’s power has by no means diminished with time.If you can’t watch it,record it!
Friday,Jan25th-
Ch5,8pm,’War in the Falklands’-This is the final part of an excellent documentary on the Falklands conflict of 1982,tonight’s programme describing the advance toward and liberation of Port Stanley. The previous programmes in the series have been first class,so there is every reason to believe that this one will be just as good.
BBC2,9pm,’Conspiracy’-This is the much talked about dramatisation of the Wannsee Conference in January 1942,where the blueprints of the Nazi’s ‘Final Solution’ were laid out and finalised.Kenneth Branagh stars in this big budget film from HBO/BBC,the same people who made ‘Band of Brothers’.As a side note,ARCO’s Moraine-built Storch was used for some of the scenes at the beginning of the film.If you only watch one film on Friday, watch this.

That is one very interesting website John, and I don’t just mean in the Historic Aviation sense either.

The Flying Boat prog last night was excellent. Having worked on and flown with the last Sunderland Flying Boat Squadron (205/209) it brought back a lot of memories for me.

Anyone interested in this squadron there are some 200+ photos shown on

Just click on to any of the 6 albums of 205/209 Squadron

Managed to see the flying boat programme on Ch4,was much better than I’d thought it would be,well written and with some excellent archive footage. The colour film of that Boeing Clipper was awesome!

Blast!
Remembered at about 10.

Only seen one of the “Seven Wonders…”, the Brunel one. As a huge admirer of Brunel I wasn’t very impressed.
I lie, saw some of the Brooklyn bridge one as well.

Thursday,October 2nd,9pm,BBC2 “Seven Wonders of the Industrial World”:Ok,Ok I know I’m taking liberties here, but these docu-dramas have been very good in the last few weeks so I thought it merited a mention. This week’s episode tells the story of Joseph Bazalgette’s battle to build a sewer system for London.

Not as far off topic as you might think when you recall that one of the Bazalgette family won a VC on bombers during WW2.

I assume they are related?

RE: On the telly this week…

I also noticed this morning that there is a programme running 21:00 – 21:50 tonight (Tuesday 22) on (I think) BBC2 about recovering some bodies from a WW1 battlefield, including 20 buried together in a mass grave with their arms linked.

Christmas did for my VCR so I’ll be watching Commando. Be nice if somebody with a working vid could record it and just let us know if they come up with a solution to the mystery.
