Through the programme Poland is looking to purchase 70 medium-lift utility helicopters to replace its aging fleet of Soviet-designed Mil Mi-8/17 ‘Hip’ utility and Mi-14 ‘Haze’ anti-submarine warfare (ASW) helicopters in service with the Polish Army, Air Force, and Navy. In total the programme is estimated to be worth PLN11.5 billion (USD3.2 billion).
The three bidders in the competition are: Airbus Helicopters teamed with Heli Invest/WZL-1 offering the EC725 Caracal; AgustaWestland subsidiary PZL Swidnik offering the AW149; and Sikorsky subsidiary PZL Mielec offering the S-70i Black Hawk
