Lockheed Martin F35A, F35B and F35C – Why F35B for UK Aircraft Carriers and not F35C

Lockheed Martin has the F35A, F35B and F35C.

Why has the F35B been the preferred choice for the UK Aircraft Carriers and not the F35C – Carrier Variant?

Footnote post RIAT and Farnborough – Why did an engine fire to a F35A on the ground at Eglin AFB on 23 June 2014 (pilot was not affected) allowed to keep all variants of the F35 grounded and dissapoint RIAT and Farnborough Trade/Defence attendees and the public?
