Shenyang J-5 Questions

Disclaimer: I know this isn’t modern military aviation, but posting this in the historic forum will likely generate very little in the way of responses, and those who may know more information are much more likely to be posting on the modern forum anyways. If you don’t like it, I’m sorry (I guess the mods can move it if they desire…).

So I was doing a bit of reading on the J-5 family of MiG-17 clones, and there were a few things that I wasn’t sure about so I thought I’d ask here. General google searches don’t turn up the specifics I’m looking for…figured I’d give it a shot here.

First question…were the J-5 & J-5A more or less straight copies of the MiG-17F & MiG-17PF? Any Chinese specific changes that weren’t found in the Soviet models?

Second question…is the cockpit section on the JJ-5 basically taken straight out of the MiG-15UTI (did the Chinese call it the JJ-2?). General descriptions you read seem to indicate that this was indeed the case, but I’m curious what if any, changes were made or did they just build the airframe to fit that cockpit?

Third question…I read that the engine was the Wopen WP-5D rated at about 5,000 pounds of thrust. Does that sound right? In photos it would appear the aircraft did not have the afterburner that its J-5 & J-5A (not to mention the MiG-17F & MiG-17PF) cousins did. Any particular reason for this?

I realize this is a pretty random subject to bring up, but just thought I’d see if anyone knew. I always found it interesting that the Chinese felt the need for a two-seat Fresco yet the Russians never did…guess they were more worried about bringing the MiG-19 & MiG-21 into service.

Oh and a photo just for those who like pictures…wrong national colors, but a pretty jet nonetheless.
