As we know any 4+ jet is not cheap. With many airforces, particularly potential F-35 customers, a high-low mix may be the way to go.
What if EADS fully developed the Mako?
Some info here: http://forum.worldofwarplanes.com/index.php?/topic/2047-eads-makoheat/
Could it not potentially be the new LO F-5?
Hypothetically say most of the preliminary design work is covered. Assume EADS goes all out for a light combat aircraft. Integration of small AESA, ECM systems as developed for the typhoon, updated glass cockpit, HMS etc..
Advance the airframe to more recent LO techniques, further composite construction, extensive ram, canopy shaping/treatment, further shaping (possible elimination of vertical tail and include v-tail as yf-23 etc). Maybe provide space for internal twin amraam and asraam, LM CUDA could potentially be a perfect candidate. The rcs would surely be useful against 4+ gen gets.
The jet has 7 external hardpoints, can carry just about any of the latest weapons developed within Europe. IRST as the gripen E skyward G.
I believe the GE F414M was selected, possibly integrate a TVC EJ200 (more thrust for increased complexity and weight vs original MAKO).
IF, it could be done with reasonable costs, in a relatively short timeframe by using much of the lastest tech already developed within the EU that we will see on gripen, rafale, typhoon within the next 5 years, surely it would have a market?
It will invole alot of the original f-35 customers to develop certain components, hopefully lessons learnt from the management disaster of the Eurofighter program would be implemented to speed things up.
