Listened to an interesting program on BBC radio 4 last night, I have placed a link to it albeit I think only our UK members will be able to listen to it:

So over 5 billion pounds worth of missing equipment, half of delivery’s to Afghanistan late, many different IT systems used by the different services all out of date and unable to communicate with each other.
Lots of excuse making by the military but a clear message that they are not interested in working together to sort the problem or invest properly in a modern solution. What has been happening is investment over the years in blue sky thinking logistics systems that are either new or try and get the old system’s to talk to each other.
What beggars belief for me is there are off the shelf logistics and asset tracking systems available. At one point one of the military types said its all complicated and its hardly like operating a series of shops. I was thinking isn’t the modern retail sector a perfect place to look to for this technology?! Lets look at Tesco or Ikea, both company’s manage a vast number of stock lines with modern asset tracking and they know where the stock is on a global scale!
As for the deep and dark warehouses… Actually I spoke to a friend recently works works for a marine company that supplies outboard engines to the navy recently. Apparently they got contacted recently as the navy had found a warehouse with a whole load of their outboards in and the navy wanted to know when they had actually purchased them!
Well worth a debate I think.
