How good is the Ka-27 at hunting?

The Ka-27 has been in service with the Russian Navy and the Naval forces of several other nations for quite a while now. Does anyone know, as a sub hunter, how effective the aircraft is? Can it, for example, detect western type SSN’s?
I know I have seen one photo of a Russian Ka-27 that forced a European…Norweign I think…SSK to surface in Russian waters a few years ago.
Were/Are the Ka-27s systems modern and effective compared to say the Merlin or Seahawk?
