Military DC-9's

I started this thread as a result of a few questions I had after reading the recent article on the Marine Corps C-9 fleet. First off let me say that I really enjoyed that article, and I’m glad that a more obscure aircraft (& mission) was covered. I hope to see more stuff like that in the future from AFM. Thanks!

As for my questions, I was wondering if anyone knows anything about the version of the the C-9 series known as the VC-9C. Obviously the C-9A Nightingale was the USAF aeromedical evacuation variant, while the C-9B Skytrain II was/is the USN/USMC model used for fleet logistics support.

I recently saw what I’m guessing was a VC-9C. It was a DC-9 airframe painted in the colors that you see Presidential/VIP type aircraft (i.e. those from Andrews AFB, MD) painted in.

I was under the impression that all USAF C-9’s had been retired as of 2005, with the C-9B’s in USN/USMC service being the only C-9’s still flying for the U.S. military.

Additionally, does anyone know anything about other nations using the DC-9 in military service?

I’ve heard mention of the Kuwaiti Air Force having C-9K’s, while Italy’s AMI had some of the Douglas twins as well.

Any thoughts?

I realize this doesn’t fit the usual topics around here (namely China, Pakistan, Russia, etc.), but perhaps there are some people out there who can shed some light on my questions.

Thanks!
