RAF using Alpha Jets?

I’ve been watching a series on TV called `Genius of Britain`.
One episode was about Frank Whittle and the presenter was taken up in a black Alpha Jet in RAF markings.
So is this a special aircraft or do the RAF use Alpha Jets for some type of training? Would have expected a Hawk.
