The volcanic eruption in Iceland caused widespread disruption to civilian air traffic in order to avoid anything like this from happening;

How would fighters be able to handle complete loss of engine power? Would they be able to glide enough distance to allow safe landing? What kind of glide ratios do modern fighters have these days? I recall reading an account of the FC-1/JF-17 having a similar experience during its early testing period, but the pilot managed to glide it back to the runway. Any other incidents like this?
