I’ve often wondered why the US Navy did not ask for an internal gun on their F-4s. They built the F-4J model which was probably the best fighter version of the naval variant, while the USAF built the F-4E.
Was it because they were working on the replacement (F-14) and didn’t want to loose the funding for it?
Any ideas?
