USAF E-3s & the Olympics

A local TV station did a story how tankers from the local base are helping the Olympics by refueling USAF E-3 AWACS which are keeping an eye on things north of the border.

Leads to questions…
Why? Norad commitments?

And since Canada is so proud of its military independence, why don’t they have that capability?

Is it the old story of..”If we need anything special we can get it from the Americans”?
(I recall reading 20+ years ago that they didn’t buy extra attrition replacements for their Hornets by thinking if they needed any, they’s get used USN examples on the cheap).
