Goliath of the skies takes wing again
Russian President, Dmitry Medvedev, has relaunched production of the world’s largest airplane – the An-124 – with key industry players saying it’s heavy lifting capacity is demand.
. . .
With an estimated price tag of $200 million per plane, Aleksey Fedorov, President of the United Aircraft Corporation, says the government should get a good return on its investment.
“We will manufacture 70 new 124s in the first phase. That will require investment by the government of half a billion dollars.”Manufacturers promise the new model will be better than before, with modern aviation electronics and improved performance. Production is expected to start next year.
If they can really sell them for $200 million, how can the US NOT buy a dozen? We’re always chartering them, better to have them in-house
I’d even be ok with retiring all C-5s if we ordered 50 An-124s

United Aircraft Corporation has re-launched production of the An-124 transport at a ceremony in Russia.
There is no reference for Ukraine. The production was only re-launched in Russia?
I think they’ve got plenty to look forward to in Ukraine…
Nov 17/09: Ukrainian Industry Minister Volodymyr Novytsky is quoted as saying that Ukraine and Russia will speed up work on preparations for resuming the mass production of An-124 Ruslan aircraft in 2010. The 2 countries had already started preparatory work, including design work by Antonov to modernize the avionics

That’ll grate.
I teach a 12 y.o. Ukranian boy here at work. He’s very proud of Antonov.

From the post with which Steve began the thread –
The new aircraft will feature more efficient engines and modern digital avionics.

So, are they relaunching it “as is” with outdated engines and avionics or will they be upgrading it?

Hopefully, the second AN-225 will follow.
What a magnificent aircraft that is.
Not in this decade, not enough money/traffic:(
